Capturing a harrowing snapshot of PTSD in his brief time onscreen throughout Nolan’s epic war film, Murphy’s incredible depiction of a soldier frozen rigid with trauma is unnervingly authentic. He’s a deeply conflicting character by the end of Dunkirk, with the audience still feeling incredibly sorry for him even after he inadvertently causes the death of Barry Keoghan’s George Mills in a scuffle.
