10 The Electric State
March 14, 2025
The Electric State is loosely based on a graphic novel of the same name from 2018. The story will follow a young woman who loses her brother, and meets a robot who claims to know where they are, so they begin traveling through a dystopian wasteland in an alternate version of 1994 together. The excitement for this film is mostly born out of the talent attached, which includes Joe and Anthony Russo as the directors, collaborating with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely as writers, the same team that worked on the MCU’s Captain America movies and Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Mickey 17 is another sci-fi film based on a novel, with the book appearing to be an incredibly promising premise for this action-packed film to adapt. The story follows a man who has volunteered to be cloned and operates as an expendable worker who will be essentially reborn after any iteration dies. However, when one clone survives, it knocks the entire balance out of whack, and leads to unpredictable outcomes.
The movie will star Robert Pattinson as the titular character, and be directed by the incredible Bong Joon-ho, who also directed Parasite, and Snowpiercer. With such a strong story as the foundation of the story, the incredible Pattinson in the leading role, and Joon-ho’s direction, the movie is sure to be an exciting and thought-provoking sci-fi film. And something that is unique from the other franchise blockbusters on the slate.

While the first Jurassic Park movie took inspiration from the popular Michael Crichton novel, and had the visionary Steven Spielberg in the hot seat as the director, the franchise has expanded far beyond what either man could have predicted when they first created their stories. With the original trilogy and the Jurassic World trilogy, there were many major developments that added to the narrative, but now, the dinosaurs are loose on the world, and that will create a brand-new set of issues.

7 Avatar: Fire And Ash
December 19, 2025
James Cameron has long been hailed as one of the greatest innovators in film, with the director being responsible for several of the largest grossing movies of all time, and changing what was possible with visual effects in movies like The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Avatar. Now, Cameron returns to the world’s most profitable movies, Avatar, for the third chapter in that epic saga.
After the events of the first movie, where Jake Sully permanently transferred his consciousness into the body of a Na’vi, and the sequel, The Way of Water, where Sully’s family has grown along with the threat to their people, Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to reignite the spark for the franchise once again. The third installment will further expand the world of Pandora, and no doubt shatter the glass ceiling of what is possible in visual effects yet again.

Mary Shelley’s monster, Frankenstein, has become an iconic figure in the world of storytelling, with dozens of adaptations over the years since the story was published. Now, Guillermo del Toro, a legendary horror and sci-fi director, is set to throw his hat in the ring for yet another adaptation about the creature and his ambitious creator, Victor Frankenstein.
Related How do you feel about the first look at Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein?
The first image for Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Frankenstein has been unveiled, and I couldn’t be more thrilled by it. The set design is just as fantastical as one would expect from the Oscar winner, but still well-suited to the gothic classic, while the tease of Frankenstein’s monster looks like a fresh twist on the character, and the bloody appearance of the titular doctor also points to a crazy vision of him.

This film will star Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, a popular sci-fi actor with roles in Star Wars, Dune, and the MCU, alongside rising star Jacob Elordi, who will play the monster. While the story is one that will be familiar to many, GdT’s unique style is sure to make this version stand out. On top of that, the spectacular cast makes this one of the most exciting films to come out of 2025.

While Frankenstein’s monster exists in isolation, he longs for someone like him to keep him company. In 2025, Maggie Gyllenhaal is also releasing her take on the story of the Bride of Frankenstein in the aptly titled The Bride. The film will star another incredible actor in the role of Frankenstein’s monster, Christian Bale, and while the story is set in 1930s, Chicago, it will follow a more established version of the monster than GdT’s origin story.

The film will explore themes of love, romance, loss, and much more in a mind-bending new take on this classic story. For many, Frankenstein is viewed as being one of the very first sci-fi stories, so having two films paying tribute to that legacy in 2025 is incredibly exciting. However, the films are likely to be very different takes on a familiar story with each having a unique style.

When Tron first came out in 1982, the film completely changed what was possible in film thanks to the innovations of the cast and crew to take this movie into the distant future. However, when a sequel was released in 2010, with technology that could now make these effects much cleaner and more smooth, the film failed to get the same traction as the original. Now, another sequel in the series hopes to take things to the next level with Tron: Ares.

Related What do you think of the new lightcycle design in Tron: Ares?
Tron: Ares has debuted a new lightcycle design in new images for the upcoming film. The lightcycle itself appears to be more evolved, and looks to have four wheels instead of two. I am sure there will still be the classic lightcycle design in the film, but likely the filmmakers wished to bring something new to the table as well. Personally, I love the new look, based on the image that has been released. Knowing that Tron comes into the real world in this movie, evolving certain elements is going to be integral to the story. As long as there is at least one classic lightcycle in Tron: Ares, I am fine with it – and cannot wait to see it in action.

Tron: Ares stars Jared Leto as a rogue malicious program from the digital world sent to the real world for an unknown mission. The film also stars Evan Peters, and several other actors who will take the franchise forward. The film has been years in the making, but it could be just what the series needs to advance beyond the original film and create a new legacy independent of what came before.

While the Predator franchise has waned in popularity in the last couple of decades, there was one entry that changed everything for the series, Prey. In 2022, this reimagining of the incredible monsters who lead this franchise was a revelation for the films, and it was largely thanks to the vision of Dan Trachtenberg, the director.
So, it makes perfect sense to call on the director who brought the Predators back to life to tackle their next big outing. Predator: Badlands will feature a story about two sisters traveling across a wasteland and presumably avoiding the imminent threat of these monsters. Elle Fanning will star, and it will be another opportunity for this franchise to become a modern hit.

Star Trek is another huge franchise that has been instrumental in making sci-fi what it is today. With many films and shows having been released as part of the series over the decades, Star Trek is peaking in terms of modern TV shows, and now the universe is set to expand once again with the introduction of Star Trek: Section 31. Unlike many of the other Star Trek movies, this film is set to be released on a streaming platform instead of in theaters, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting.

The film will star Michelle Yeoh, reprising her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou from the Discovery series. The movie will see Georgiou join the secret Starfleet operation, Section 31, and face the consequences of her former actions. This film also delivers excitement similar to when the classic versions of the show crossed over into films, which is an exciting prospect on its own.

1 The Mandalorian & Grogu

Star Wars, for the longest time, was a series of movies that focused on the Jedi and their struggle to survive despite overwhelming opposition. These films had a time to shine, and after nine movies in the mainline series, the story of the Jedi has been well and truly told in minute detail. However, the franchise has found success once again by shifting the focus and attention towards less prominent figures in that universe.
Jon Favreau now acts as the head of the Star Wars division at Disney, and with his magnificent success with The Mandalorian, the bounty hunter is set to join the big screen heroes in The Mandalorian & Grogu. Favreau returns to direct, and the film will follow the adventures of these incredibly popular characters from the TV series in one of the most anticipated films from the sci-fi franchise in many years.
