12 Best Movies Like Blink Twice

Blink Twice, Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut, has viewers searching high and low for movies that share some of the psychological thriller’s DNA. Co-written by Kravitz and E.T. Feigenbaum (High Fidelity), Blink Twice is a fairly singular movie-going experience, though some of its plot points are familiar to the genres it pulls from. In the film, cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) has a seemingly chance encounter with billionaire tech mogul Slater King (Channing Tatum), who, after being “canceled,” became an advocate for therapy. In what Frida accurately dubs a “real casual” move, Slater also bought a private island.

While Blink Twice boasts plenty of hints that telegraph where its twists and turns are headed, the film is still a harrowing journey through Frida’s unearthed trauma. At the same time, Blink Twice features some surprisingly funny moments. It’s a disorienting experience that makes the terror at its core all-the-more unsettling. Blink Twice‘s divisive ending also plays with viewers’ expectations for the genre, but, from its alluring start to its bloody finale, Kravitz’s movie does have some thematic and narrative overlap with some other stellar thrillers, mysteries, and revenge tales that make for great post-Blink Twice viewing.

2 Men (2022)

Directed By Alex Garland

Close

Although it’s not one of Alex Garland’s best movies, Men is still a chilling folk horror film that traces many of the same themes as Blink Twice. In the A24 psychological horror film, Jessie Buckley plays Harper, a widowed woman who takes a holiday to a countryside village. Hoping to navigate the trauma of her husband’s sudden death in the relative peace of the remote home, Harper finds herself increasingly disturbed and tormented by the village’s bizarre men — all of whom are played by Rory Kinnear. Although the real meaning of Men‘s ending can be a tad difficult to parse out, it’s a chilling and worthwhile watch for genre enthusiasts.

The 1997 Funny Games is an Austrian psychological horror-thriller film written and directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Michael Haneke — and the 2007 version is Haneke’s English-language remake of his own film. The English-language version, which stars Naomi Watts, is a shot-for-shot remake, so it’s hard to recommend one over the other. In both versions of Funny Games, two young men hold a family hostage in their vacation home, torturing them with sadistic games.
