The potentially frustrating character is given a genuine touch by Garfield. It’s an important aspect of the performance, which makes the character endearing. The film’s exploration of masculinity is fraught with metaphors, and if not for Garfield’s sincerely aloof performance, the symbolism would feel silly.

Ari Aster has made a name for himself as a horror director, with three A24 horror movies to boot. His sophomore feature follows Dani, played by Florence Pugh, during her time at a Swedish midsummer festival she’s forced to attend by her boyfriend and his friends. Dani is emotionally fragile, still coping with the freak accidental death of her whole family.

Pugh expertly blends this wounded vulnerability with Dani’s responses to the harrowing events she has to witness and participate in. It’s a tragic performance that steadily builds to a more complex character than she initally appeared. It’s an impressive performance that helped establish Pugh as a star.

The first A24 film to win an Academy Award for acting, Room is an endearing mother-daughter survivalist drama that follows Ma, played by Brie Larson, and her son, played by Jacob Tremblay. The plot centers around them as they try to escape captivity. Larson’s layered and compelling performance won her an Academy Award for Best Leading Actress.

Andrea Arnold’s Magnum Opus, American Honey is an epic story that follows Star, played by Sasha Lane, on her journey with a group who have a hedonistic lifestyle. It paints a bleak picture of youth culture, embodied by Lane’s performance. The film depicts how they have been abandoned by society and the government in a reality where they have little hope of surviving beyond a certain age or ever finding satisfaction in a job.

Lane’s performance is perfectly calibrated, likable yet prickly. Lane embodies Star’s loss of innocence with small cues in her body language that gradually develop into the climactic exhalation. It’s a stunning performance that relies on subtle elements to really stand out.

A biopic of sorts, The End of the Tour tells the story of the five-day interview between Rolling Stones journalist David Lipsky and writer David Foster Wallace. It is based on notes taken by the former, who Jesse Eisenberg plays with clinical accuracy. As is the case with almost every Eisenberg performance, he utilizes his charisma to brings intellectualism to life like few other actors can.

The End of the Tour also features a great performance from Jason Segel, who earned a nomination for Best Male Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards for his performance.

End of the Tour also features a distinct deviation as Eisenberg plays a more subdued version of that personality. Eisenberg character’s intelligence, while visible on his face, hides behind a veil of loneliness. It’s an impressive performance by the actor, and a reminder of his skills at bringing intellectuals to life.

The line between inexpressive and repressed is a very fine one when it comes to acting performances, and Paul Mescal was seemingly born to know exactly where that line exists in any given context. Mescal has played enough grieving characters by now, that it’s become a niche for him. Even then, his performance as the suicidal Calum in Aftersun stands out.

Mescal does his best to be emotionally present for his daughter, but ultimately struggles to connect with her or with people in general. This is a particularly heartwrenching portrayal of mental illness. Mescal brings a sense of natural grief to the role, and embodies it with natural power.

However, the scariest moments of all doesn’t involve any supernatural entity. Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse features one of the best Willem Dafoe performances ever. It follows Willem Dafoe’s Thomas Wake, an old lighthouse keeper. Wake struggles tries to survive the scary supernatural occurrences that plague him and his younger lighthouse mate, played by Robert Pattinson.

Dafoe’s character is chaotic and angry, and his wild performance perfectly matches the terrifying atmosphere of the movie.

Dafoe’s character is chaotic and angry, and his wild performance perfectly matches the terrifying atmosphere of the movie. He has an undeniable screen presence and looks almost like an apparition who fits into the world of The Lighthouse. Without his aggressive dialogue delivery, the movie wouldn’t have achieved its terrifying potential.
