AEW Fight Forever draws heavily from classic wrestling games from previous generations of consoles, particularly the Nintendo 64 game WWF No Mercy. The gameplay style is more arcade-oriented and features exaggerated wrestler looks and presentation, deviating from the realistic simulation style seen in Yuke’s recent wrestling games.
The game was released on June 29, 2023 for multiple platforms, including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. Initial reviews were mixed, praising its nostalgic arcade-style gameplay but criticizing its limited presentation, modes, and customization options.

THQ Nordic recently revealed one of the initial updates for AEW: Fight Forever, which will bring the game to version 1.11. While the update is already rolling out across platforms, Nintendo Switch users may have to wait a little longer to receive it.
The main focus of this update is to address and fix several bugs present in the game. Below, you’ll find comprehensive patch notes detailing the changes included in the AEW: Fight Forever version 1.11 update.
AEW gameplay
AEW: Fight Forever offers an arcade-style gameplay experience with nine different match types in its initial release. These include singles matches, tag team matches, ladder matches, Casino Battle Royale and Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch. A notable feature of the game is the inclusion of online play and intergender wrestling, making it the first Yuke game to include this feature since WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009.
During the AEW Games 1.0 special event on November 10, 2020, Kenny Omega confirmed that the game will be the spiritual successor to classics such as WWF No Mercy and Virtual Pro Wrestling. Gameplay is designed to emulate the style and mechanics of the AKI engine that powered earlier games.
The game features a comprehensive creation suite that allows players to customize wrestlers, entrances, teams, and arenas. Players can adjust camera angles and incorporate pyrotechnics and special effects into their entrance sequences. Additionally, AEW: Fight Forever includes 15 mini-games as part of the base game, with 4 additional mini-games available as downloadable content, bringing the total to 19.
Players can earn in-game currency by completing challenges, which can be used to unlock various creation kit parts, additional mini-games, an “Elite” difficulty mode, alternate costumes, and five unlockable wrestlers: Cody Rhodes , Paul Wight, Mr. Brodie Lee, Owen Hart and AEW referee Aubrey Edwards.

Available entrance moves also include moves inspired by NJPW wrestlers and WWE Superstars, as well as two entrance videos from Chris Jericho’s time in WWE.
The game has a career mode called “Path of the Elite,” where players can guide members of the AEW roster or their own created wrestlers through a schedule spanning four blocks, covering events in 2019 and 2020. Each block coincides with one of AEW’s main pay-per-view events: All Out, Full Gear, Revolution and Double or Nothing.
Each block consists of three storylines, for a total of sixteen storylines throughout the mode. Gameplay is structured as four weeks per block, with the first three weeks taking place on AEW Dynamite and the fourth week serving as a PPV event. Players experience the daily life of AEW wrestlers, four rounds per week.
Optional matches are available in AEW Dark and AEW Rampage, and players can also play mini-games against Kenny Omega (as a partner in 2v2 matches) and/or The Young Bucks (Nick and Matt Jackson).
The storyline unfolds via video packs, starting with 2019’s Double or Nothing, with male player characters vying for a chance to claim the inaugural AEW World Championship in a casino battle royale, while female player characters compete for the title in Fatal-4- All Out was a single match for a spot in the inaugural AEW Women’s World Championship. The story develops based on match results and player choices, and character progression carries over to the rest of the game, encouraging players to replay the mode with different wrestlers.
