Akinwunmi Dapo Ambode is an experienced civil servant, administrator and accountant.
He ran for Governor of Lagos State in April 2015 and won, defeating Jimi Agbaje of the main opposition party by 150,000 votes.
He is also the founder and managing director of Brandsmiths Consulting Limited; established to provide public finance and management consultancy services to governments at all levels, semi-public entities and agencies.
Akinwunmi Ambode also founded the La Roche Leadership Foundation; a non-profit organization that aims to install the Nigerian flag and the Lagos state flag in government-run schools across the state.

Early life
Born at Epe General Hospital, Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode was born on 14 June 1963. He was raised by his parents; the late Mr. Festus Akinwale Ambode and Mrs. Christianah Oluleye Ambode (née Oresanya), and is the sixth of ten children born to his parents.

Akinwunmi Ambode’s father; Mr. Festus Akinwale Ambode, worked as a teacher at a local school in Epe, before moving to Lagos Mainland in 1967 in search of greener pastures. Ambode was four years old at the time.
Sadly, Mr. Festus Ambode passed away in 1981, leaving behind his wife and ten children. However, Mrs. Christianah Ambode was a skilled businesswoman. She thrived as a seamstress, providing for her children’s education.

Education
Akinwunmi Ambode attended St. Jude’s Primary School, Ebutte Meta, Lagos from 1969 to 1974. While in Grade 5, he sat for the National Common Matriculation Examination and was admitted to Federal Government College, Warri, Delta State that same year.
After seven years of schooling, Akinwunmi Ambode graduated with very impressive results. He was also the second best candidate in West Africa in the Senior Secondary School Leaving Examination held in 1981.
During his secondary school years, he played for hockey and cricket teams and was also a member of the now defunct Bendel State cricket team. Akinwunmi Ambode also joined the Federal Government Colleges Warri Alumni Association (FEGOCOWOSA) and has been an active member of the association to date. He has twice served as the chairman of the Lagos State Branch and as the National Chairman of the Association for three consecutive years. During his tenure in office, he worked with the alumni network to restore the academic conditions of the college, undertaking major projects along the way.
Akinwunmi Ambode also studied at the University of Lagos from 1981 to 1984, before graduating with a Master of Accountancy at the age of 21. He also attained the qualification of a Chartered Accountant during that time. He served at the Central Bank of Nigeria, in Sokoto State.
Akinwunmi Ambode has studied at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania for the Advanced Management Program; Cranfield School of Management, Cranfield, UK; Institute for Management Development, Lausanne, Switzerland; INSEAD, Singapore; and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He was also awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to the Hubert Humphries Fellowship Program in Boston, Massachusetts.
Career
Akinwunmi Ambode’s career as a civil servant dates back thirty years. He was appointed as Assistant Treasurer in Badagry Local Government, Lagos State, Nigeria and worked for three years before being transferred to Somolu Local Government as Auditor. His exposure to various financial planning and management techniques has given him an edge over the years.
After serving as Council Treasurer in Somolu Local Government for many years, he was transferred to Alimosho Local Government, Lagos State, to work under the same title. In 2001, he became the Acting Auditor General for the Local Government, Lagos State, Nigeria; with his appointment being sealed after being confirmed by the Council of State.
Akinwunmi Ambode’s service to the Lagos State government was rewarded in January 2005, after he was appointed as the permanent secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Finance. He also served as the accountant general of Lagos State, from 2006–2012, overseeing all financial responsibilities of the state, with over a thousand accountants working under him.
At the same time, the state’s financial revenues are allocated through effective budgeting and management by the State Treasury Office (STO).
Campaign for Governor
In April 2015, Akinwunmi Ambode ran for Governor of Lagos State, after securing membership of the All Progressives Congress political party. He won the election, defeating Jimi Agbaje of the main opposition party by 150,000 votes. He succeeded Babatunde Fashola and resumed office on 29 May 2015.
Akinwunmi Ambode lost the 2019 governorship primary to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, essentially eliminating him from running for a second term.
Ambode’s consulting career
He founded Brandsmiths Consulting Limited in August 2012, after decades of successful public service. The company’s objective is to provide Public Finance and Management Consulting services to governments at all levels, semi-public entities and agencies.
Personal life
Akinwunmi Ambode married Bolanle Patience (née Odukomaiya) in 1991. He is also the father of twins; a boy and a girl.
The former Lagos State Governor is also a devout Christian and is widely respected for his goodwill gestures. In 2013, he founded the La Roche Leadership Foundation; a non-profit organization that aims to install both the Nigerian and Lagos state flags in government-owned schools across the state.
