Aliaume Damala Badara Akon Thiam, son of Kine dancer Gueye Thiam (mother) and traditional jazz musician Mor Thiam (father), was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 16, 1973. He has an older brother named Abou Thiam.

Soon after he was born, his parents moved to Dakar, Senegal, West Africa, where they remained for 7 years. The couple moved to Jersey City with their family after returning home. His parents left him with his brother in Jersey City when he started high school and went to Atlanta, Georgia with the rest of the family.

Akon is an unruly teenager who often disregards classroom rules. He struggled with the other kids and eventually started hanging out with the local boatmen.
