Early life

Alex Otti, a member of the Labor Party, was born to the late Reverend and Mrs. Lazarus Weze Otti.

He is an Abia ethnic from Umuru, Umuehim village in the Ancient Kingdom of Ehi Na Uguru, Isiala Ngwa South LGA.

Otti completed his secondary education at Ngwa Senior Secondary School in Aba and Okpuala Ngwa Technical School, where he also received his West African Examinations Council (WAEC) diploma. Otti scored the highest marks in his graduating class.

He then went on to complete his undergraduate studies at the University of Port Harcourt. In 1988, Alex Otti obtained a first class degree in economics.

He graduated with a master’s degree from the University of Lagos in 1994. In addition, Otti has attended several courses at prestigious international institutions, such as the Executive Development Program at Wharton, Stanford and Columbia Business Schools.

Career

After graduating from college, Alex Otti started working in the banking industry in 1989. He first worked in the operations department of International Bank of Nigeria, a subsidiary of Citibank New York.

He then worked at Intercontinental Bank of Nigeria where he held positions in corporate banking and treasury and financial services division.

He joined Societe Bancaire Nigeria Limited (Commercial Bank) in 1992 and rose to senior management positions there.

He then moved to United Bank of Africa (UBA) where he was the head of corporate banking for the South Division. He started working as a deputy general manager at First Bank of Nigeria, PLC, in May 2001.

Otti was tasked with expanding the bank’s oil and gas business while at UBA. He oversaw the bank’s energy expansion while at First Bank.

He was promoted to deputy general manager in 2004. Alex Otti was appointed CEO of Commercial Banking a year later.

After success at several Nigerian commercial banks, Otti joined Diamond Bank as group managing director and chief executive officer in March 2011.

On 24 October 2014, Otti replaced Uzoma Dozie as Chief Executive Officer and Joint Managing Director.

After leaving banking, Otti became governor of Abia state under the banner of the All Progressives General Alliance (APGA).

However, he was defeated by Okezie Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This happened when the Supreme Court of Nigeria upheld Ikpeazu’s 2016 election as governor and overturned the Court of Appeal’s decision.

Following his successful 2015 gubernatorial race, Alex Otti ran for re-election on March 11, 2023, although this time he ran on the Labor Party platform.
