Pokemon GO
Pokémon GO is a mobile game released in 2016 that allows players to find, catch, train and battle virtual Pokémon in the real world using their smartphones. It is free to play but offers in-app purchases for extra items. There were 150 Pokémon at the beginning of the game, and now there are about 700.

When it launched, people liked the idea, but there were technical issues. Despite this, it remains extremely popular, with over 500 million downloads worldwide in 2016. It’s known for using location and augmented reality (AR) technology to encourage people to be active and even help local businesses by attracting more customers. But it’s also been criticized for causing accidents and nuisances in public places. Some governments are concerned about safety and regulate their use.
By 2018, it had over 147 million monthly players and by 2019 it had been downloaded over 1 billion times. It makes a lot of money and will exceed $6 billion by 2020.
Pokémon GO gameplay
Augmented reality gameplay in Pokémon GO begins with players creating and customizing their avatars. These avatars then appear on a map based on the player’s true location, featuring landmarks such as PokéStops and Pokémon Gyms. PokéStops can be equipped with Lure Modules to attract more Pokémon, while Gyms can serve as battle locations for team matches.

As players move around, their avatar moves within the game map. Different Pokémon species are found in different areas; for example, water-type Pokémon are found near water. When encountering a Pokémon, players can use their device’s camera to view it in AR mode, or use a universal background.
While the game is free, players can purchase items such as Poké Balls and Incense within the app. Players capture Pokémon by throwing Poké Balls at them during encounters. Successful captures will earn players in-game currency such as candy and stardust, which can be used to upgrade and evolve Pokémon.
Events such as Community Days increase Pokémon appearances and provide exclusive moves. New Pokémon are added regularly, including region-specific and legendary Pokémon. Gyms have been revamped for teamwork, and Raid Battles allow teams to take on powerful Pokémon for rewards. Trainer Battles and Team GO Rocket Battles add additional layers to gameplay, making Pokémon GO an ever-evolving adventure.
