Andre Agassi was born on April 29, 1970 in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. He was raised by his parents, Emmanuel “Mike” Agassi and Elizabeth “Betty” Agassi.
Agassi grew up with three siblings – Rita Agassi, Philip Agassi, and Tami Agassi. He attended the American School. Agassi’s ethnicity is white and his religion is Christian.
Career
Andre Agassi turned pro at the age of 16 and played his first tournament in 1986 in La Quinta, California. While he won his opening match against John Austin, he lost his second match to Mats Wilander.
Agassi made rapid progress in 1987, winning his first singles title at the Sul American Open in Itaparica. He finished the year ranked No. 25. The following year, 1988, proved to be a breakthrough season, as Agassi won six more tournaments, including Memphis, the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships and the Volvo International events.
Agassi’s strong 1988 campaign resulted in a year-end ranking of 3rd in the world, behind only Ivan Lendl and Mats Wilander. He was named Most Improved Player of the Year by the ATP and Tennis magazine.
Notably, Agassi opted out of the Australian Open for the first eight years of his career and did not play Wimbledon from 1988 to 1990.
