Andrew Eppley Shue was born on February 20, 1967 in Wilmington, Delaware to James William Shue, an attorney and real estate developer who served as president of the International Food and Beverage Corporation and operated Active in Republican Party politics.
James William Shue had previously run unsuccessfully for the United States Congress in New Jersey. Her mother, Anne Brewster, is a banking executive who served as vice president of the private division of Chemical Banking Corporation.
Shue has an older sister, Elisabeth, who appeared in uncredited films early on; he co-starred with her in Adventures in Babysitting and The Karate Kid. Shue graduated from Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey, where he played football.
He then attended Dartmouth College, where he was an All-American football player. He spent the winter in Glasgow, where he studied and played football for Queens Park FC. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Dartmouth in 1989.
