Wiggins was born on February 23, 1985 in Toronto, Ontario and grew up in Thornhill, Ontario. Andrew Wiggins is the son of former NBA player Mitchell Wiggins and former Olympic runner Marita Payne Wiggins.

Wiggins was declared for the 2014 NBA Draft and was announced as the overall selection by the Cleveland Cavaliers, becoming the second Canadian selected after Anthony Bennett.
