Angie Motshekga (born 19 June 1955) real name Matsie Angelina Motshekga is currently the Minister of Basic Education in South Africa. She has held this position since 2009.

Early life
Angie Motshekga was born in Soweto, a township in the city of Johannesburg in Gauteng, South Africa, on 19 June 1995.
Education
Angie Motshekga attended primary school at various schools in Soweto.
She graduated from boarding school in Matatiele and attended the University of the North, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education.
Angie Motshekga also went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Masters from the University of the Witwatersrand, Mota.
Teaching profession
From 1981 to 1983, Angie Motshekga taught at Orlando High School. She resigned after being appointed as a lecturer at the Soweto College of Education.
In 1985, she became a lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand. She taught there for 9 years.
Political career
In the 1980s, Angie Motshekga was a member of the Soweto Education Crisis Committee, which later became part of the National Education Coordination Committee.
She is also a member of the South African National Education Union and the United Democratic Front.
Angie Motshekga is active in the Pimville Civic Association.
She was the National Convenor of the Teachers’ Solidarity Talks which led to the formation of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union. She was also the Regional President of the African National Congress Women’s League.
She served as director of the president’s office from 1994 to 1997 and was elected deputy provincial secretary of the ANCWL in 1997.
Following the 1999 general election, in 1999, Angie Motshekga was sworn in as a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and appointed as chairperson of the legislature’s education committee.
In 2000, she was transferred by Prime Minister Mbhazima Shilowa to work in the Social Development Department of the Executive Council.
Angie Motshekga returned to the legislature for a second term after the 2004 general election.
In 2008, Angie Motshekga was elected national president of the ANC women’s league.
In April 2009, Angie Motshekga was elected to Parliament. The newly elected President Jacob Zuma then split the Department of Education into two separate new departments.
Angie Motshekga was then appointed Minister of Basic Education. She was sworn in on 11 May 2009.
In August 2015, she was removed from her position as President of the Women’s Union.
By 2019, she became the longest-serving education minister in South Africa’s history.

Angie Motshekga is married to Mathole Motshekga, who is the former premier of Gauteng and a former ANC member.
