Early life and education
Anh Do is an Australian writer who was born in Vietnam on 2 June 1977. He and his family were refugees who immigrated to Australia in 1980. He is the son of Tam Do and Hien Do. He has two siblings: Khoa Do and Tram Do.
He attended TAFE and a university, studying fine arts and law, but dropped both to pursue comedy, and last year he cut back on his comedy performances to return to painting full-time.
Anh Do and his family had a hard time in Australia. He ate differently from other children, was slow to learn English, and dressed differently. He learned English quickly and his grades improved. He worked hard for many years and finally found success.
Profession
Anh Do received his secondary education at St Aloysius College in Milsons Point. At the age of 14, he started a small business raising tropical fish. In his first year of law school at the University of Technology Sydney, he ran a stall selling American Indian artefacts, which he later expanded into four franchises.
Six months before graduating with a double degree in business law, he was offered a 60-hour-a-week job at a law firm. He decided to switch to stand-up comedy. Since 2013, he has cut back on his stand-up performances to focus on painting. He was a finalist for the Archibald Prize in 2014, 2017 and 2019.
From 2016 to 2021, Anh Do hosted ABC-Brush TV’s Anh’s Rise to Fame. The show featured Anh Do interviewing Australian celebrities while also painting their portraits. He was criticized for using photographs and pre-painting portraits with the help of an art tutor.
