Biography

Larissa de Macedo Machado (born March 30, 1993) is a talented Brazilian singer, songwriter and television presenter known by her stage name Anitta. She signed a recording contract with Warner Music Brazil in January 2013 after achieving national commercial success with her professional debut single, Meiga e Abusada, in 2012. With the release of the single Show das Poderosas in 2013, she gained national popularity.

Anitta released her self-titled debut album in July of the same year, which spawned four hit singles on local charts and was certified platinum.

Ritmo Perfeito (2014), her second studio album, was also a minor commercial success domestically, and was released on the same day as her debut live album, Meu Lugar. In 2015, she released her third studio album, Bang, which went platinum and spawned four hit singles: Deixa Ele Sofrer, Essa Mina é Louca, Cravo e Canela and Cravo e Canela. The album played a major role in establishing her near-dominance on the Brazilian music charts.

From 2016 to 2018, Anitta collaborated with several international artists, including Nile Rodgers, Maluma, Iggy Azalea, Major Lazer, Alesso, and J Balvin. In 2017, Anitta released Paradinha, her Spanish-language debut, which placed her in a seminal crossover with Latin pop and Spanish-language reggaeton.

Downtown, her collaboration with Colombian singer J Balvin that same year, became her breakthrough song in many Spanish-speaking markets. In 2019, she collaborated with Madonna, Sofia Reyes, Rita Ora, Luis Fonsi, Ozuna and the Black Eyed Peas. Kisses (2019), her fourth studio visual album in three languages, won critical acclaim and earned her a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Urban Album.

Three months later, Anitta’s Spanish-language single Envolver, from her fifth studio album Versions of Me (2022), topped Spotify’s Global Top 50 chart, making Anitta the first Brazilian and Latin American artist to achieve this feat with a solo song. She remains the only Brazilian artist to dominate the global music charts, topping the Billboard Global Excl. US chart and second on Billboard Global.

She grew up in a poor family with divorced parents, with her mother having custody of her children. She began her singing career at the age of eight, when, at the request of her grandparents, Anitta joined the choir of the Santa Luzia Parish in her neighborhood. She began learning English at the age of 11 and showed interest in pursuing an academic career and excelled.

After graduating from one of the country’s most prestigious public schools, Dom Pedro II School, Anitta completed a technical course in public administration while still in high school. Her mother’s teacher later provided her with free dance lessons. Her brother, Renan Machado, is currently one of her song producers and oversees her career.

Anitta took her stage name from the character Anita in the book Presença de Anita, which was adapted into a television series by Rede Globo in 2001. She decided to pursue an artistic career a year later. That same year, she received the Best New Artist award from the Associaço Paulista de Criticos de Arte, Brazil’s leading cultural agency.

Career

Anitta’s professional singing career began by chance in 2010 when she was introduced to funk carioca producer Renato Azevedo (aka Batutinha). He saw some of her home videos on YouTube and invited her to record some demos for him. After being cleared, she was offered a contract with Furaco 2000, an independent and professional funk record label.

Anitta then released her first single, Eu Vou Ficar, which was played to exhaustion on local radio stations in Rio de Janeiro, and the song was included in the series Armagedom, which also featured other musicians in the music industry. Her first television performance was on SBT’s Cante se Puder on May 16, 2012, when she sang the single Extravasa, a song recorded by axé singer Claudia Leitte, inside a beer mug. She chose not to renew her Furaco 2000 contract in June 2012 and instead signed with the K2L Entertainment agency.

Anitta signed a major record deal with Warner Music Group in January 2013 and released the song Meiga e Abusada. After being included in the soundtrack of the telenovela Amor à Vida, the song became one of the most requested songs on Brazilian radio stations in early 2013. The song’s music video was filmed in Las Vegas and directed by American Blake Farber. The song was chosen as the lead single from her debut album, which was released in June 2013.

On October 18, 2021, Anitta will appear alongside Billie Eilish, BLACKPINK, Barack Obama, Pope Francis, Jaden Smith, and others in the YouTube Originals Dear Earth, which aims to raise awareness about global climate change. The singer played the role of Girl from Rio, and she sang the song.
