Anna Kendrick’s 15 Best Movies, Ranked

The best Anna Kendrick movies feature a strong mix of romantic dramas and comedies and some fantasy and thriller films along the way. Kendrick first rose to prominence with a supporting part in The Twilight Saga and, since then, has grown into one of the most prominent actors in Hollywood. She has led a franchise, been nominated for an Academy Award, and lent her voice to some beloved animated characters.

Kendrick has such a versatile filmography that her movies vary pretty heavily in quality, with some being honored during the awards season and others mostly remaining in comfort food guilty pleasure cinema. However, one of the key things about her film releases is that she is often one of the best things in them, delivering great performances every time she appears on the big or small screen, elevating anything she appears in.

Although she has shined in a fair share of serious roles, Anna Kendrick seems to be at her best in a comedic setting. The Voices is right up her alley and the same can be said for the film’s lead, Ryan Reynolds, who is also great in this wacky tale. The Voices centers on Jerry Hickfang (Reynolds), a man who has schizophrenia and doesn’t take his meds, leading him to hear his pets advise him to become a killer.

The film is done in a way that keeps everything light and Kendrick appears as Lisa, Jerry’s co-worker who is also a potential love interest and victim. The entire film is a strange one, though it has a critical rating of 75% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, thanks mostly to Reynolds’ performance. However, the supporting cast of Kendrick, Gemma Arterton, Jacki Weaver, and more are great in their roles opposite Reynolds’ unhinged serial killer.

Other than a role in 2003’s Camp, Rocket Science is the first film for Anna Kendrick, coming when she was just 22 years old. The movie tells the story of a teen with a stutter (Reece Thompson) who joins his school’s debate team after developing a crush on one of the team members. Although this was an early role for Kendrick, she showed why she would become a sought-after actor.

She ended up as the perfect choice, as she was nominated for Best Supporting Female at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Kendrick’s performance as debate team star Ginny Ryerson was a highlight that helped make her someone to watch out for. Despite this being a very early career role for Kendrick, she was one of the first cast members to sign onto the film, with the director saying that he knew she would be in the movie after her very first audition (via More About Movies). She ended up as the perfect choice, as she was nominated for Best Supporting Female at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Stowaway is a 2021 sci-fi thriller about four people on a space mission trapped aboard a canister without enough oxygen to get them to Mars before they all die. This is a small personal movie. While there is a plot of mission control trying to find a way to save them, what carries the film is the relationship and conversations between the four trapped people trying to survive the situation. These are Anna Kendrick as the ship’s doctor, Toni Collette as the commander, Daniel Dae Kim as the biologist, and Shamier Anderson as a stowaway.

Critics gave the movie average to positive reviews, as it sits at 76% positive on Rotten Tomatoes. The main complaints went to pacing problems of the movie and its script, but most critics praised the performances, calling it an engaging and well-acted movie that requires the characters to take moral decisions. For her part, Kendrick takes on a tragic role that allows her to deliver one of her most heartbreaking performances.

The movie made Anna Kendrick a recognizable actress, as it was only her third major role. The franchise sees a human teenager named Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) falling in love with a vampire named Edward (Robert Pattinson), only to end up in a love triangle with a werewolf named Jacob (Taylor Lautner). However, the first movie had very little of the love triangle and played out more as a straight romantic horror story, with Edward needing to save Bella from a vengeful vampire.

Twilight set up the story by showing Bella in school in a normal life before throwing her into the world of the supernatural. That is where Anna Kendrick was, as she played Jessica, a high school classmate of Bella and someone who always showed petty jealousy towards the newcomer. Kendrick appeared in four of the five Twilight movies, and while Eclipse was the best of the franchise, Kendrick only had a significant role in this first movie as she was a friend of Bella’s in the human world before things moved further into the realm of vampires.

There’s no doubt that Anna Kendrick is a strong leading lady, but her best work has often come as a supporting star. That is true in 50/50, where she appears alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Bryce Dallas Howard, and more. Based on a true story, the film focuses on Adam (Gordon-Levitt) and those close to him after he finds out that he has cancer at just 27 years of age. As he undergoes therapy, he learns from the Internet that his survival rate is only 50/50.

Kendrick portrays Katherine, Adam’s inexperienced therapist who he bonds with after breaking up with his girlfriend, who cheated on him after his cancer diagnosis. However, while this is a romantic love story for the two, this is more about her helping him find his way through this tough time in his life, and helping him realize he doesn’t have to go through this alone. Their chemistry is among the many things that were praised in this emotional yet funny movie.

Some movies do well at the box office but kind of get forgotten soon after release, only to find new life on cable TV. That’s the case with The Accountant, which performed solidly on a commercial level but didn’t get talked about much until it began airing often on networks like TNT. The film follows a public accountant with high-functioning autism (Ben Affleck) who uncooks the books for criminal organizations. However, he soon has to fight for his life when the mafia guns for him.

The well-crafted claymation film is about a young boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who can communicate with ghosts and must use that ability to help end a centuries-old curse.

Courtney is the protagonist’s older sister who is part of the team that joins him in attempting to save the town. In the movie, Kendrick stars as Alice, a woman in an abusive relationship with a psychologically manipulative boyfriend named Simon. He has slowly been forcing Alice away from her friends, and when they realize what is happening, they attempt to help her get away, but this only angers Simon, who sets out to take her home and maintain his control of her.

This was a tough role for Kendrick to take on, as she shook off her romantic comedy persona and portrayed a damaged woman who needs to escape an abusive relationship. Critics praised the film’s portrayal of abusive relationships and Kendrick’s solid work as a woman in denial, as well as the importance of having a strong support network.

It’s tough to find a better ensemble cast than the one in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans, Brie Larson, Aubrey Plaza, Kieran Culkin, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Mae Whitman, and Ellen Wong are just some of the names that join Anna Kendrick in this film.

It tells the story of the titular Scott (Cera) as he fights off the evil exes of his new girlfriend Ramona (Winstead), with action and comedy that make the best use of director Edgar Wright’s signature style. Kendrick has one of the most important supporting parts as Stacey Pilgrim, Scott’s sister. Kendrick reprised the role for a table read in 2020, while also taking on Larson’s part as Envy Adams, and then reprising the role once again in the Netflix anime adaptation, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
