The idea for the game came from Alexander Dracott while driving across the Olympic Peninsula in 2019. He thought about making the game on his own, but realized he needed help. He started building the team during the COVID-19 pandemic. They released Pacific Drive in September 2022, with the PlayStation 5 and Windows versions launching on February 22, 2024. Critics loved the game, especially its atmosphere, characters, and car designs. But others said the gameplay was too repetitive and difficult.

Pacific Avenue gameplay
Pacific Drive is a game where you try to survive in the Pacific Northwest in 1998. You play from a first-person perspective, either on foot or in a station wagon. You can improve your car in the garage, which is like your home base. In the garage you can use a special headset to check your car and sometimes you have to fix problems like a horn or a flat tire. The garage also has a cool invention station where you can craft machines, discover new routes, add fuel to your car, and destabilize areas.

While you’re out in the world, your car can be attacked by metal monsters chewing on it. You can use a circular saw to remove them. There are other challenges, such as electrical issues and obstacles that interfere with the car’s electronics. Weather can also affect how your car handles.
As you explore, you may find crafting recipes and blueprints to upgrade your vehicles. You can also discover notes, audio logs, and talk to other characters to escape the Olympic Forbidden Zone. In order to advance in the game, you need to collect power cores in each level. But when you do, the world becomes more dangerous, enemies attack, and a big storm begins.
The game is a mix of repairing your car, crafting, and exploring as you navigate the challenging Pacific Northwest. Looking for a dose of nostalgia? Minh Khang Cente’s gaming articles look back at classic arcade games that defined a generation. Relive the excitement of the arcade era.
