Apex Legends is an online game where teams of three use special characters called “Legends” with unique abilities. Players select a legend and parachute across the map to find weapons and gear while avoiding other squads. The game’s map shrinks over time, forcing players to encounter each other until only one squad remains. Players can be resurrected if they are knocked down, and can be resurrected by collecting the flags of eliminated teammates within a limited time.
The “Arena” mode was introduced in Season 9 and involves multiple rounds of 3v3 team deathmatch. The goal is to score until one team leads by two points or at least three points. This mode differs from the battle royale mode in that it allows players to purchase equipment before combat using materials obtained in previous rounds, similar to games such as Counter-Strike and Valorant. However, this mode was later removed in Season 16.
Development of Apex Legends
Developed by Respawn Entertainment, Apex Legends is different from their previous games, Titanfall and Titanfall 2. Development on Apex began before Titanfall 2 was released in 2016, and by 2017 the entire Titanfall team was working on the project. The game originally started out as a smaller prototype exploring elements of the Titanfall sequels, but has since transformed into a successful battle royale style game that retains only certain aspects of the Titanfall series.
The studio faces challenges in marketing Apex Legends. Due to gameplay differences and the lack of iconic Titanfall elements, they decided to treat it as a new IP rather than a Titanfall game. Respawn had to convince Electronic Arts (EA) to back the project, which went against EA’s expectations for the studio. To create buzz, they arranged a surprise reveal through influencers during the Super Bowl, which was a departure from the typical marketing strategy for EA games.
The game was developed using a modified version of the Source engine, pushing the limits of the engine due to the game’s large map and draw distance. There are plans for cross-platform play, but expect some limitations in terms of progression and in-game purchases across different systems.
Respawn aims to expand the game’s reach and plans to bring “Apex Legends” to China through a partnership with Tencent Games. They also intend to launch the game on various platforms, including mobile devices and Nintendo Switch.
Apex Legends originally launched in 2019 for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. Over time, it expanded to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2022. A mobile version called Apex Legends Mobile was released in May 2022 but was shut down in May 2023.
On the eSports front, Apex Legends quickly gained traction as a competitive game, with tournaments and events planned from the early days of the game. The Apex Legends Global Series was announced in 2019 and includes a variety of online and in-person events with generous prizes. ESPN also showcased Apex Legends events, aiming to establish them as competitive esports alongside traditional sports events. The third year of the Apex Legends Global Series kicked off in July 2022, attracting the participation of many teams and offering generous prizes.
