Avatar: Pandora’s Frontier
“Avatar: Pandora’s Frontier” is an open-world action-adventure game based on the “Avatar” movie series, released in 2023. The game is developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft and will be available on PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X/S starting December 7, 2023. It is the second video game in the series, following Avatar: The Game (2009), and received mixed reviews, generally comparing poorly to Ubisoft’s Far Cry series.

In Avatar: Pandora’s Frontier, players explore Pandora’s western frontier and experience its beauty and dangers from a first-person perspective. Developed in partnership with Lightstorm Entertainment and Disney, the game immerses players in the world of Pandora, where they wake up as strangers after being kidnapped by the RDA as children. As the RDA threatens Pandora and her clan again, players must reconnect with their lost heritage and fight to protect their home.
The story follows the Na’vi protagonists as they fight against encroachment by the Resource Development Authority (RDA), and features new characters in the standalone work. While expanding the Avatar universe, the game is not a direct sequel or movie tie-in to Avatar: The Game, but instead explores new aspects of the universe alongside the upcoming sequel film.
Despite being a canon, the game doesn’t significantly crossover with the film, although small elements like Francis Ardmore are mentioned. The game is set on the western border of Pandora, with multiple regions, including Kinlo Forest, home to the Aranach Weaver Tribe; the Upper Plains, where the Zeswa Tribe lives and teaches Dreadhorse Riding; and the Cloud Forest, where Carmetir Home of the Healer Tribe.

“Avatar: Pandora’s Frontier” gameplay

The story is related to the movie but stands on its own. The game supports two-person cooperative multiplayer games.

Players explore Pandora’s western border and organize the Na’vi tribe to resist RDA’s plunder of natural resources. Pandora is divided into three zones with unique biomes, quests, and residents. Using “Na’vi sense,” players can highlight interactable objects and enemies’ weaknesses. They can use RDA weapons like assault rifles and Na’vi weapons like bows and arrows. As players progress, better equipment will be unlocked to enhance combat capabilities. Crafting materials collected in the wild can be used to craft ammunition and other items.
Players can hunt animals for resources, but using guns will prevent resource collection. Defeating RDA forces and aiding Na’vi allies earns “Clan Favor,” which can be used to purchase rare weapons, armor, and crafting materials. The player character is agile and can perform advanced acrobatics such as double jumping. They can also ride ikran, a flying creature, for fast travel.
