early life
Awkwafina was born Nora Lum on June 2, 1988 in Stony Brook, New York City.
She is of Asian descent and holds American nationality.
Her father, Wally Lum, is Chinese, and her mother, Tia Lum, is Korean, a painter who immigrated to the United States from South Korea in 1972.
Sadly, Awkwafina’s mother has passed away.
When she was four years old, her mother died of terrible pulmonary hypertension.
Awkwafina was raised by her father and grandparents in the small town of Forest Hills, Queensland.
Her great-grandfather was a Chinese immigrant who opened Lum’s, a Cantonese restaurant in Flushing, Queens, in the 1940s.
It was one of the first Chinese restaurants in the area and is still one of the best.

Awkwafina is an alumna of Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School. Although she participated in music extracurricular activities at school and received training in classical music and jazz, she also learned to play the trumpet.
Additionally, she studied Mandarin at a higher education institution, Beijing Language and Culture University.
Likewise, she attended the State University of New York at Albany where she studied journalism and women’s studies courses and graduated in 2011.
Music career
Awkwafina started rapping at the age of 13. But she didn’t become known to the world until 2012, when she released a song called “My Vag” on YouTube.
In fact, the song got her fired from a publishing company after her employer recognized her in the viral video.
Despite this, she released a solo hip-hop album titled Yellow Ranger on February 11, 2014. The album contains 11 tracks, including her previous YouTube hit My Vag.
In 2016, Awkwafina collaborated with Margaret Cho on a song called “Green Tea,” which mocked Asian stereotypes. She also worked as a disc jockey in New York bars to financially support her career.
Additionally, she released a seven-track EP titled We Trust on June 8, 2018. The EP won the 2019 A2IM Libera Award for Best Hip-Hop/Rap Album.
Acting career
Awkwafina appeared in six episodes of Girls’ Rules Seasons 3 and 4. From 2015 to 2017, she hosted the short-form talk show web series Tawk for digital production company Astronauts Wanted.
Then in 2016, she played the supporting role of Christine in the film Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, where she is a member of Kappa Nu.
In 2018, Awkwafina played Rebecca in the independent comedy Dude. She also played a major role in Ocean’s 8 and played Wu Jinyan in the film Crazy Rich Asians.
She then hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live on October 6, 2018, becoming the second female East Asian American entertainer to host the show.
In 2019, Awkwafina starred in the film “The Farewell” directed by Wang Ziyi, in which she played the heroine Billie.
The film received critical acclaim, and she subsequently won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical, becoming the first Asian to do so. She later achieved commercial success playing an avatar named Ming Fleetfoot in the film Jumanji: The Next Level.
In July 2019, Awkwafina played Katie in the Marvel Studios film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, starring Simu Liu and Tony Leung Chiu-wai.
Awkwafina is currently starring in the 10th episode of the TV series Awkwafina is Nora from Queens.
