Early life and education
Azawi, a renowned musician, was born in Kampala on February 2, 1996. She spent her early years in the Nakulabye slums in a lower middle-class family. Despite the hardships, Azawi’s mother, Nakamatte Mary, worked tirelessly as a beauty salon owner to support Azawi and her three siblings, including her half-sisters and brothers.
Tragedy struck during Azawi’s last four years of high school when she lost her father, Walusimbi Samuel. Undaunted by the hardships, Azawi continued to pursue her education. She began her academic journey at Buganda Road Primary School and then attended Kevin’s Mother Elementary School in Mukono, where she completed her primary education.
Azawi’s pursuit of knowledge took her to various institutions, reflecting her determination to overcome challenges. She earned her Bachelor of Commerce from Makerere University and studied at schools such as St. Henry College in Ggangu Masajja, Lubiri Secondary School, London College in Nansana, and St. Janani Luwum Secondary School for her A levels. Career
In 2005, Azawi’s artistic journey began with dance when she joined the renowned dance troupe Kika. Her passionate rhythm resonated, leading her to join another dance troupe, Crane Performers. Azawi’s dedication crossed borders, allowing her to showcase her dance talent in China.
The turning point came in 2011 when Azawi discovered her natural talent for songwriting. This was the beginning of a new chapter where she wrote lyrics, pouring her emotions into each word. The culmination of her efforts came in 2016, a pivotal year when she met Beta, Eddy Kenzo’s manager. With Beta’s guidance, Azawi’s musical journey officially took off.
Since his breakthrough, Azawi has been a consistent presence in the music scene, giving audiences hits like Repeat it, Crazy LoverAnd Love you more. In addition to her solo endeavors, she has collaborated with prominent figures in the Ugandan music scene, including Eddy Kenzo, Vinka and Lydia Jazmine.
Azawi’s dedication and musical talent have garnered her international acclaim, landing her on billboards in iconic locations like Times Square in New York and Los Angeles—a historic feat as she is the first female artist from Uganda to achieve such fame.
