Career
Baba Rahman’s career began at Dreams FC in the Ghana Division Two. His excellent performances led to a season-long loan to Asante Kotoko in the Ghanaian Premier League. In 2012, Rahman was a finalist for the Discovery of the Year Award in the league, but unfortunately lost out to Joshua Oninku.
Rahman joined German Bundesliga club Greuther Fürth in 2012 for no transfer fee. His impressive performances saw him become a regular for the team and he played 34 games in his first season. Rahman also played a key role in Fürth’s success as they won promotion to the Bundesliga in his second season with the club.
Rahman’s impressive performances in the Bundesliga attracted the attention of several top European clubs, leading to his move to Chelsea in 2015 for a fee of £14 million, potentially rising to £22 million. He was initially expected to be the club’s first-choice left-back but suffered a serious knee injury in just his second game, ruling him out for the rest of the season.
Over the next few years, Rahman began to have loan spells at clubs such as FC Schalke 04, Stade de Reims, RCD Mallorca and Reading. Although he faced challenges in regaining full fitness and form, he showed his exceptional skills.
In July 2021, Rahman moved to Greek side PAOK on a free transfer. Since then, he has consistently appeared as a starter for the club, accumulating 54 appearances over two seasons and contributing to their victory in the 2022 Greek Cup.
After joining the Ghana national team in 2014, Rahman participated in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, where Ghana finished as runners-up. He was also part of the Ghana squad for both the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
