Baking Impossible is a crazy and surprising addition to the baking reality TV genre. Hosted by Justin Willman and judges Baker Andrew Smyth, Joanne Chang and Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi, the show features a quirky mix of engineering and baking, with nine teams testing their creativity by creating “amazing, well-designed and mouth-watering marvels.”
The whole idea seems to have come straight from Andrew Smyth’s head. He’s a professional engineer and a great baker, and with Baking Impossible, he seems to have found a way to combine his two passions. If you want to know more about Andrew, his baking, engineering, and dating, keep reading.
Baker Andrew Smyth on baking the impossible
When he released the trailer for his show on Instagram on September 8, 2021, Andrew described the premise of the show as follows: “We’ve paired amazing bakers and smart engineers into teams of bakers, challenging them to create edible creations that taste delicious and pass rigorous engineering stress tests to win $100,000. Trust me, you’ll love the teams and the challenge.”
Andrew added that he is the executive producer of the show, in addition to being one of the judges, and is the one who develops “the challenges and concepts”.
He is also the one who came up with the idea of “Bakineering”. He had the idea in 2018 and that was the start of the creation of the show.
Additionally, Bakineering as an idea exists outside of Baking Impossible as well. Andrew has delivered a number of “Bakineering” programmes across the UK and Ireland with partners such as the Royal Institution, European Space Agency and Cheltenham Science Festival.
In addition to Andrew, Baking Impossible is hosted by Daniel Calin. The show premiered on October 6, 2021 on Netflix.
Baker Andrew Smyth on GBBO
Before making Baking Impossible and judging the show, Andrew took part in The Great British Bake Off. In series 7 (2016) of GBBO, Andrew Smyth came second out of 12 contestants. The prize went to Candice Brown and Andrew and Jane Beedle were the runners-up.
Andrew had a comfortable season, with the Star Baker title for two weeks and only one bad week. He was the clear favorite to win the championship. But Alas!
Does baker Andrew Smyth have a partner?
When Andrew Smyth was on The Great British Bake Off and actually appeared in the media, it was reported that he was single. Not much is known about his relationships beyond those reports.
However, Andrew did have a “college wife,” whatever that means. In February 2019, he posted a photo with a woman, the two of them drinking “espresso martinis,” with the caption: “Celebrating 9 years with my college wife. From oversized suits to espresso martinis, these are the best of friends ♥️😍 #sidneysussex”
He tagged Betty Issac (most likely his “college wife”) and the Sidney Sussex Students’ Union Instagram page in the post.
