This ambitious undertaking draws players into a narrative filled with suspense, mystery and urgently needed strategic decisions. As players complete this quest, they find themselves on a challenging and dangerous path while working to ensure Roland’s safe return and the triumphant reunion of his friends in the shadows.

“Baldur’s Gate 3: Roland” complete mission walkthrough

In Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll meet multiple characters with multi-act storylines, and Roland is one of them. When players first meet Roland, he comes across as an arrogant and self-centered spellcaster who brags about being the apprentice of the famous wizard Lorokan. However, as his questline unfolds, players will discover a different side of him. In all three acts of BG3, players must find and interact with Roland to advance his questline. Follow these steps strictly to ensure the safety of your siblings and the successful completion of Roland’s mission.

Act 1 Roland’s Journey

In Act I, you first meet Roland in the Jade Forest, one of the tiefling refugees. He proudly mentions that once he reaches Baldur’s Gate, he will be apprenticed to the famous wizard Lorroakan. You can find him in the valley behind the Druid Jungle. Here, faced with the sheer force of the approaching force, he joins his siblings Carl and Leah in debating whether to stay or leave.

To advance Roland’s storyline, players must convince him to stay in the Emerald Forest until the goblin threat is eliminated, as druids and other tieflings can benefit greatly from the presence of powerful wizards. You can use the Persuasion skill or take advantage of the Dragonborn or Ranger background options to convince him.

After convincing Roland to stay in the Druid Jungle, speak to him again to learn more about his upcoming apprenticeship under Lolocan. He enthusiastically (perhaps arrogantly) expresses his desire to take this opportunity to reach Baldur’s Gate. After dealing with the goblin camp and celebrating with the tiefling, your paths will separate and you won’t meet Roland again until Act II.

Act 2 Roland’s Journey

In the second act, Roland takes refuge with other tieflings at the Last Inn of Light. Here, players discover that tieflings escaping the Druid Jungle are ambushed by the Absolute’s followers, and Zevro appears to have betrayed them. Most of the tieflings were taken to Moonrise Tower, and their survival is uncertain. However, Roland is determined to rescue his siblings Carl and Leah.

After talking to Roland at the hotel (who appears to have had some alcohol), he will head off on his own to rescue Carl and Leah. Unfortunately, his arrogance alone was not enough to dispel the Shadow Curse. When he’s gone, head to the southernmost bridge leading to the western part of the Shadow Cursed Lands (the town of Leswein). From a distance, you should see combat and health indicators. It’s crucial for the party to find Roland quickly, because if he dies, his quest line ends.

Roland found himself fighting the Shadow Cursed Undead far south of the Inn of Last Light. Activate turn-based mode to minimize the damage Roland takes, draw the attention of the Dark Curse Undead, and provide healing support to ensure he survives the fight.

After saving his life, talk to him again at the Last Light Inn. Roland, perhaps bitterly, admitted that he could not complete the task alone. However, after rescuing the tieflings from their prison in Moonrise Tower and rescuing Carl and Leah, Roland’s attitude began to change.

Act 3 Roland’s Journey

Once you arrive at Baldur’s Gate with the refugee tieflings, after the resolution of Act II and the defeat of Catheric Thom, you won’t encounter Roland again until you enter the Sorcery Clans. This magical mall is also the entrance to Loro Canta, which can be accessed after arriving in Lower Town from Livington. Rowland appears to be running the front office, but things are not as they seem.

Throughout the game, Rolokan is searching for Nightsong, a secret hinted at by Roland as early as the first act. By the end of Act 2, players will learn the truth about Nightsong. After revealing Nightsong’s whereabouts to Loroakan and speaking with her at the camp, she left to seek revenge on another would-be oppressor. His next encounter with Lorocan prompted him to make a crucial decision.

Despite being mentored by Rolocan, Roland discovered that his teacher was at heart an arrogant bully and a sadistic teacher. As soon as Carl and Leah are rescued, he turns against Rolocan, leading to a battle with the tower’s current wizard leader.

After defeating Loroakam (and experiencing an impactful cutscene involving Nightsong), Roland reveals the extent of Loroakam’s cruelty as his teacher. He expresses regret for his previous rude behavior towards the players, sincerely thanks them, declares his intention to take control of the tower, and pledges allegiance to the upcoming battle against the Absolute. At this point, Roland’s mission is finally over!

How to find Roland in Shadows of Baldur’s Gate 3?

In Baldur’s Gate 3, Roland is a survivor of the Absolute cult’s attack on tieflings. If you chose to save the Emerald Forest from the goblin threat in the first act, you’ll find Roland in the Last Light Inn, drinking to ease his grief. He laments his inability to stop the Absolute Cultists from capturing his family and taking them to Moonrise Tower.

In the BG3 mission “Finding Roland in the Shadows” you will find Roland southwest of the Shadow Battlefield waypoint. He can be found at the end of a path to the left of the bridge, just before reaching the toll booth, where you must face Geringo Thom.

Once you reach Roland, he will most likely be attacked by two shadows, and your job is to protect him. While the battle may not be as intense as previous encounters, ensuring Roland’s safety is paramount. After rescuing Roland and talking to him, he may feel depressed, but the important thing is that he’s still alive.

After the conversation, Roland will return to the Last Light Hotel to reunite with his family. Return to the hotel and interact with Roland, who is having a heated argument with his family. After ending the conversation, you’ll be rewarded for successfully reuniting, completing the “Finding Roland in the Shadows” quest in Baldur’s Gate III.
