Barack Hussein Obama II (born August 4, 1961), known professionally as Barack Obama, is an American politician. He served as the 44th President of the United States from 2009 to 2017. He is also the first black president of the United States.

Early life and education
Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, HI, Hawaii on August 4, 1961.
He was the first and only President of the United States born outside the 48 contiguous states.
Stanley Ann Dunham, his mother, had English, German, Swiss, Scottish, Irish, and Welsh ancestry. In 1960, she met Barack Obama Sr. in a Russian class at the University of Hawaii at Manila, where he was a scholarship student.
Barack Obama Sr., a Kenyan, was married at the time. In 1961, Barack Obama Sr. and Stanley Ann Dunham married. Six months later, Barack Obama was born.
After divorcing Stanley Ann Dunham in 1964, Barack Obama Sr. returned to Kenya and remarried. After returning to the United States, Barack Obama Sr. only visited Barack Obama. However, Barack Obama’s father died in a tragic car accident.
At the time, Barack Obama was 21 years old. Stanley Ann Dunham married Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian, in March 1965. Lolo Soetoro returned to Indonesia when his visa extension application was denied. In 1967, Stanley Ann Dunham and Barack Obama joined him there.
Barack Obama was born in Indonesia and lived there until 1971, when he returned to Honolulu to live with his grandparents. He graduated from high school there in 1979. Lolo and Ann were married until 1980. Unfortunately, she passed away in 1995 after a long battle with cancer.

He transferred to Columbia University in 1981 and received a BA in political science with a concentration in international relations. He received his BA from Columbia University in 1983. He worked for Business International Corporation as a financial researcher for a year, then worked for various non-profit organizations in New York as a project organizer.
Barack Obama moved to Chicago in 1985 after being appointed director of the Community Development Project, a nonprofit organization. He worked there from 1985 to 1988. He spent two months traveling the world in 1988, including five weeks in Kenya visiting relatives.

Career
In February 2007, Barack Obama launched his presidential campaign in front of the Old State Capitol building in Illinois. The location chosen for the announcement was notable because it was also the site of Abraham Lincoln’s landmark “House Divided” speech in 1858.
In a campaign focused on themes of optimism and change, Barack Obama emphasized issues such as ending the Iraq War quickly, improving energy independence, and reforming the health care system.
The Democratic presidential primary attracted a large number of candidates. After initial contests, the race narrowed to a two-way contest between Barack Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton. The race remained tight throughout the primary, but Barack Obama maintained a solid lead.
Hillary Clinton dropped out of the race on June 7, 2008, and endorsed Barack Obama.
Barack Obama announced his selection of Delaware Senator Joe Biden as his vice presidential candidate on August 23, 2008. Barack Obama selected Joe Biden from a field of candidates that included former Indiana Governor and Senator Evan Bayh and Virginia Governor Tim Kaine.
Hillary Clinton urged her supporters to support Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado, and both she and Bill Clinton gave speeches in his support at the convention. Barack Obama gave his acceptance speech before an estimated 84,500 people at Invesco Field at Mile High; the speech was viewed by more than three million people worldwide.
Barack Obama’s campaign broke several fundraising records in both the primaries and the general election, notably in the number of small donations. On June 19, 2008, he became the first major party presidential candidate since the system’s inception in 1976 to reject public funding in the general election.
