Early life
Basani Maluleke’s birthplace is in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria, South Africa.
She started primary school at a local school but did not complete it because her parents transferred her to a private school.
At that time, schools in the town were regularly attacked by the police under the apartheid regime.
She was born into the family of a lawyer and judge, George Maluleke. Her inspiration was her father, who owned a law firm. According to her, she got her strong work ethic from her father, Judge George Maluleke.
She is the younger sister of Tsukani Maluleke, a trained chartered accountant who was appointed South Africa’s auditor general by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Education
Basani Maluleke began and completed his primary and secondary education in South Africa.
She continued her studies at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and completed a Bachelor of Commerce. After completing her first degree, she returned to complete a Bachelor of Laws.
She went to the United States to obtain an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, USA.
Career
Basani Maluleke is the first black female CEO of a commercial bank in South Africa. She is the current CEO of African Bank. She took over from Brian Riley in March 2018.
In 2012, she returned to South Africa after completing her MBA at the Kellogg School of Management, becoming head of private banking at First National Bank.
She joined a corporate finance company after leaving banking and then moved to African Bank as a non-executive director in 2015. She co-founded and established African Century Ventures to support African businesses.
Basani Maluleke is a former director of Transcend Capital. She gained extensive experience in financial services during her long career in corporate finance at Rand Merchant Bank.
Personal life and charity work
Basani Maluleke founded the NGO Get me to Graduation to fund the needs of students in universities and colleges in the country. She has helped many young people through this foundation.
She is a trustee of Click Foundation, an online solution distributor for teaching children to read. Basani Maluleke is retired and has had a successful career in various banking sectors such as investment banking, private banking and private equity. She is a role model for young girls across Africa.
