Inspired by the 2011 Egyptian revolution, Youssef created his first satirical show, “The B+ Show,” in 2011. It was a low-budget, five-minute YouTube show filmed in his laundry room. The show garnered more than 5 million views in its first three months.
The success of “The B+ Show” led to Youssef being offered a deal by Egyptian television channel ONTV to create a longer-form satirical news show called “Al Bernameg” (The Program). The show cost around $500,000 and became the first internet-to-TV conversion in the Middle East.
On his show, Youssef ridiculed many Egyptian public figures and celebrities and created a forum for writers, artists and politicians to freely discuss the social and political scene.
The show’s success inspired many amateur satirical initiatives on social media. In 2012, Youssef was invited by Jon Stewart to appear on The Daily Show, where Stewart praised the sharpness and intelligence of “Al Bernameg”.
