Early life
Medina was born on January 24, 1958 in California to Dominican parents in a poor family. The death of his mother and the abandonment of his father sent him to numerous foster homes before being taken in by his aunt.
He befriended a wealthy white teenager whose family allowed him to live in their garage in Beverly Hills. He also attended Beverly Hills High School and had the opportunity to star in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
Career
Medina originally joined a group called Apollo and released an album on the Gordy/Motown label in 1979. Medina co-wrote several songs with The Temptations, Rick James, and Smokey Robinson, the lead singer of these songs.
These were produced by Ray Motown. He became the AR&R Director of Motown at the age of 24 and was a protégé of Berry Gordy. He then moved to Warner Bros. Records and was asked to take on the positions of Vice President and General Manager with popular artists.
