Development of Apex Legends
Apex Legends is produced by Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind the Titanfall series. It is published by Electronic Arts (EA) and released in 2019. Development on the game began before Titanfall 2 was released in 2016, and the entire Titanfall team began working on the game in 2018.

The idea for Apex Legends came from trying out different game prototypes after completing support for Titanfall 2. One of the prototypes was inspired by the popular battle royale genre at the time. The team realized that traditional Titanfall mechanics, such as piloting a Titan and wall running, wouldn’t work well in a battle royale game. Instead, they focused on creating strong character classes and team-based gameplay.
Respawn wanted to make a game that was played with friends, so they designed Apex Legends around team play. They also wanted to challenge the conventions of the battle royale genre and add their own unique twist to it. The game has undergone extensive playtesting to ensure balance and interesting game mechanics.
In terms of marketing, Respawn decided to treat Apex Legends as a new intellectual property (IP) rather than part of the Titanfall series. Inspired by Beyoncé’s album release, they used an unexpected release strategy to generate buzz without the need for a traditional marketing campaign. The game’s success led to plans for cross-platform play and a release on mobile devices.

In addition, the game was launched on the Steam store for Windows players in 2020.
In terms of esports, “Apex Legends” has also spawned spin-offs in the form of competitive events and tournaments. The game’s popularity as an eSport has led to the establishment of ongoing competitive seasons, such as ALGS Year 3 starting in 2022.
