Early life

Betsy King was born on August 13, 1955, in Reading, Pennsylvania, and still maintains a home in Limekiln, a nearby town.

Before her rise to fame, she won her first tour victory seven years after turning professional at the Women’s Kemper Open.

Betsy King attended Exeter Township High School in 1973.

At Furman University in 1976, she was on a national championship team that included players like Beth Daniel, Sherri Turner and Cindy Ferro.

In 1976, she was still a low amateur at the U.S. Women’s Open.

Career

In 1977, Betsy King began her professional career when she joined the LPGA Tour. In 1984, she won her first tournament at the Women’s Kemper Open. She also won three titles, the LPGA Money Title and the Player of the Year Award, and she added 21 top-10 finishes to earn the LPGA Tour Player of the Year Award.

From 1984 to 1989, she won a total of 20 LPGA events (more than any other golfer, male or female, in the world). She won at least once in the next 10 years, with a total of six victories. She was also named Player of the Year three times, while winning two scoring titles and three money titles.

In 1993, Betsy King won one tournament, one scoring title, and one money title. She finished second in two major tournaments and second three times in other events, making her a total of five different runner-up finishes.

A year later, from 1987 to 1992, she averaged one major and then won her sixth major in 1997. Before being inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, she won her 30th in 1995 and in 2001, she won the last of her 34 LPGA victories.

From 1996-2004, Betsy King hosted an event on Tour, the Wachovia LPGA Classic. She was an employee of Habitat for Humanity, a charity organization, building projects and working in former Soviet Bloc countries with orphanage relief agencies. She was formally inducted into the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.

She has represented the United States in the Solheim Cup five times (1990, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998) and was named captain of the United States team in 2007.

In 2007, the Solheim Cup was held in Halmstad, Sweden from September 14 to 16, she led her team (the United States team) to a 6-12 victory over the European team.
