Early life and education
Born on October 27, 1986 in Lagos, Nigeria, Betta Edu is a Nigerian politician whose childhood was shaped by the guidance of her parents. Her father, Emmanuel Eke, is a businessman, while her mother’s name is Mrs. Eke.
Coming from a Catholic family in Calabar, Cross Rivers State, Betta Edu is one of five siblings and has a twin brother. Growing up in Calabar, she later attended the prestigious University of Calabar.
Career
Betta Edu started her political journey in 2015, serving as the youngest Special Adviser on Community and Primary Health Care to the Governor of Cross River State. Her dedication and competence earned her the position of Chairman of the Cross River State COVID-19 Task Force in 2020.
In this important role, Betta has been pivotal in effectively managing the challenges posed by the pandemic in the state. In July 2023, she received a vote of confidence from the Women Leaders of All Progressive Congress across 36 states and the FCT during their visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the venerable Presidential Villa in Abuja. This united support underscored Edu’s remarkable achievements and undeniable leadership qualities, cementing her as a prominent figure in the APC party.
In recognition of her tremendous dedication to promoting gender inclusion and empowering women, children and vulnerable groups in the country, Betta Edu was honored with the Outstanding Leadership Award by Maryam Babangida National Women’s Development Center and Ministry of Women and Social Development in Nigeria in July 2023. The Federal Government of Nigeria, led by Director General Asabe Vilita Bashir, played a pivotal role in conferring this prestigious title.
In a historic move after the Nigerian Senate released its list of ministerial candidates in July 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated Betta Edu as minister. This groundbreaking choice makes her the first female minister representing Cross River State and the youngest minister in the Federal Executive Council of Nigeria in the Fourth Nigerian Republic.
However, on January 9, 2024, an important event took place when Betta Edu, then acting as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reductionhas been facing suspension over allegations of engaging in illegal financial transactions.
