Early life
Bhanupriya was born and raised in Rangampeta village near Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, on 15 January 1967. She was born into a Telugu-speaking family.
Her father’s name is Pandu Babu, and her mother’s name is Ragamali. Her name was Mangabhanu initially and she adopted Bhanupriya along the way. She has a niece Shishya Ray.

Bhanupriya and her family then moved to Andhra Pradesh from their hometown to Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She has an older brother named Gopikrishana and a younger sister, Shantipriya, who has been a film actress since the 1990s.
Education

According to sources, she did her primary education at an undisclosed school in Andhra Pradesh. She completed her secondary and higher education in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
Personal life
Bhanupriya married Adarsh Kaushal, a digital graphics engineer, at the Sri Venkateswara temple in Malibu, California. They are said to have been married on June 14, 1998.
They had their first child, a daughter whom they named Abhinaya, in 2002. Bhanupriya and Adarsh Kaushal fell out and divorced in 2005, citing some irreconcilable differences.
Bhanupriya returned to India soon after the divorce and continued her acting career. She lives in Chennai with her daughter. Adarsh Kaushal passed away in 2018 after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Bhanupriya was one of the leading actresses for over a decade, from 1983 to 1995. She made her debut with the Tamil film Mella Pesungal (1983). She then appeared in the hit Telugu film Sitaara, which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu that year.
She then played the role of an ornithologist in the 1985 mystery film Anveshana. In 1986, she made her Hindi film debut with Dosti Dushmani.
In 1988, Bhanupriya appeared in Swarnakamalam, which was screened in the pan-India section of the 1988 International Film Festival of India and the Ann Arbor Film Festival.
Bhanupriya received the Indian Express Award for Best Actress, Nandi Award for Best Actress and Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu for her performance in the film. In 1989 and 1991, her performances in the Tamil hit films Aararo Aariraro and Azhagan respectively earned her the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards Special Award.
Bhanupriya received the JFW Divas Award of South India – for her contributions to South Indian cinema, the Gemini TV Purakaram for lifetime achievement in television and many other honours.
