Bianca Buitendag (born 9 November 1993) is a South African professional surfer. She won the silver medal in the women’s shortboard event for South Africa at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Her father, Colin Buitendag, is also a professional surfer for South Africa’s Western Province. Bianca Buitendag started surfing to follow in her father’s footsteps, and is now an Olympic silver medalist.

Early life
Bianca Buitendag was born on November 9, 1993, in George, Western Cape, South Africa. She grew up on the beach at Victoria Bay, just outside Cape Town. She learned to surf with her two brothers at the age of eight, thanks to her father.
Her family moved to the Southern Cape region of South Africa when she was twelve. When Bianca Buitendag first started school, she only knew Afrikaans, so her parents enrolled her in an English school.
Her father introduced her to surfing when she was a child, and by the age of eight she was competing. She won third place in her first Olympic sport, a historic feat and a great start to her career.
Education
Bianca Buitendag started her primary education at a school in the south of Cape Town, but we do not yet have exact information about the school she attended. We also do not have details about her secondary school and university.
Personal life
Bianca Buitendag, a former South African silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, notes that overcoming personal adversity, such as the death of her father, Colin Buitendag, strengthened her determination to pursue achievement.
Her father, a former regional surfer from the Western Cape Province, died in 2015 at the age of 54. Bianca Buitendag’s mother, Yvette Buitendag, “fought two malignant diseases in one year.
Bianca Buitendag added that she is living proof that miracles can happen and that anyone can achieve their dreams no matter what they are going through, as long as they don’t give up.
“She believed that if I could do it, anyone could do it.” She recalls that she is a living example of a miracle.
Bianca Buitendag is not married, she has no media publications regarding her boyfriend or her love life.
Career
After her father passed away in 2015, despite the pain of loss that came with his death, Bianca Buitendag finished the world surfing competition in fourth place. And for the first time in her career, she was ranked number 12 in the world the following year after breaking through in the competition.
In surfing’s Olympic debut, South African surfer Bianca Buitendag won a medal for her country; she finished 17th out of 20 athletes. She had a great performance, but clearly her best effort wasn’t enough.
