Early life
Billie Joe Armstrong was born on February 17, 1972, in Oakland, California, to Ollie Jackson and Andrew Marciano Armstrong, a jazz musician and Safeway truck driver. His father died of esophageal cancer at the age of 10.
His mother worked as a waitress at Rod’s Hickory Pit in El Cerrito, California, where he and Mike Dirnt made their debut performance in 1987. Marci, Hollie, Anna, David, and Alan are Armstrong’s five siblings.
Armstrong attended Hillcrest Elementary School in Rodeo. He attended schools in Crockett, California, namely Carquinez Middle School and John Swett School, and later Pinole Valley High School. He dropped out of school on his 18th birthday to pursue a music career.

In 1987, he formed the band “Sweet Children” with his childhood friend Mike Dirnt. While Sean Hughes played bass and John Kiffmeyer played drums, they played guitar.
Dirnt took over as bass player after Hughes left the band. Due to his marijuana addiction, the band changed their name to “Green Day” in 1989. Their debut EP, 1,000 Hours, was released that same year.
The following year, they completed recording 39/Smooth, their first studio album, as well as Slappy, an extended play. Both albums were included on the compilation 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours.
