Billions (TV series)

Billions is a riveting American television series created by Brian Kopelman, David Levien and Andrew Ross Sorkin. The show premiered on Showtime on January 17, 2016, and its seventh season recently concluded and will premiere on August 13, 2023.

The series mainly takes place in the bustling financial centers of New York and Connecticut, and delves into the world of high finance. At its core is Bobby Axelrod, played by Damian Lewis, a savvy hedge fund manager who relentlessly pursues wealth and influence.

Axelrod’s brutal tactics often draw the attention of U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhodes (Paul Giamatti). Chuck Rhoades draws inspiration from Preet Bharara, who served as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York in Manhattan from 2009 to 2017.

The show is inspired by real-life federal prosecutions related to financial crimes, including Bharara’s 2013 indictment of SAC Capital Advisors hedge fund manager Steven A. Cohen and the Salomon Brothers’ 1991 manipulation of U.S. Treasury bonds.

The narrative is intertwined with various subplots, including Maggie Siff’s psychiatrist-turned-acting coach Wendy Rhoades, Asia Kate Dillon Dillon, market analyst Taylor Mason, and Axelrod’s trusted right-hand man, Mike “Wags” Wagner. Played by David Costabile.

Notably, Billions is the first American television series to introduce Taylor Mason’s non-binary character. This groundbreaking entry earned the show multiple nominations for the GLAAD Media Awards for Outstanding Drama Series, as the show is recognized for its positive representation of the LGBTQ community.

Billions Season 7 Episode 4 Ending Explained

In this pivotal scene, Prince has a long-awaited meeting with Chuck, during which Chuck makes his intentions clear. Chuck’s main demand is that Prince abandon the presidential campaign and return to a profit-oriented path. However, Prince, known for his unwavering self-confidence and reliance on intuition, refused to comply with this request. Instead, he chooses to heed another of Chuck’s warnings to cooperate with Liu, who is about to face prosecution.

To appease Mr. Liu, the prince made extravagant promises, assuring him of smooth trade relations with Taipei for the two years of his imaginary presidential term. He also guaranteed that Liu Xiaodi would avoid jail. When their plane landed, Prince staged a deliberate public show to bring Liu to Chuck while pretending not to know that the plane had been chartered without his knowledge.

He publicly thanked Chuck for bringing it to his attention, thus controlling the narrative and trying to deflect any negative press. In his conversation with Ella, Chuck highlighted the difficulty of running a presidential campaign while constantly looking at himself, which means Prince will now have to operate in a similar way.

Prince took further steps to boost his public image by funding relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Rossi through the Indiana National Guard. However, his adviser Luke stressed that Prince needs to more quickly anticipate and respond to disasters such as hurricanes to maintain his image as a responsible leader.

In a subplot involving Scout, he is reluctantly asked to give up his dreams again, reinforcing the idea that Americans are stupid. Loyalist Scooter continued to make sacrifices for Prince, finding solace in his cherished Bernstein baton, which he entrusted to Prince for safekeeping until his presidential campaign was suspended . This turn of events raises the hope that Scout will not make such a personal sacrifice to serve his master’s ambition again.

Eventually, Wendy had a conversation with Vargas, during which she astutely deduced that Vargas was deliberately causing chaos in the hurricane to tarnish Prince’s image. While Wendy admitted that this caution made Prince more cautious, she implored Vargas to curb his impulses during this critical phase of the battle, emphasizing the need for analysis and strategic thinking. Wendy expressed her deep commitment to their cause.

Billions Season 7 Episode 4 Review

Carl’s insistence on attending various self-help meetings eventually bore fruit, and he and Chuck stumbled upon a promising lead. They discovered NFT scammer Kai Huang Liu, whose father had a lucrative business relationship and private jet with Mike Prince.

This intriguing connection raises questions about the nature of their connection, whether it’s a unique form of mutual affection or simply a business partnership. True to his promise to the super PAC, Chuck decided to seize the opportunity and planned to prosecute Xiao Liu for cryptocurrency fraud and Prince for assisting a fugitive.

Mike Prince’s day began with an unexpected remark from Bradford Luke that he believed most Americans would not want to deal with a classical music connoisseur like Prince. He suggested that Prince should reconsider allowing Scooter to conduct the Philharmonic because it might alienate potential voters.

However, the prince, with Wendy’s support, firmly rejected the idea. Wendy reminds Luke that Prince embodies change and challenges conventional notions of what a “leader of the free world” should be. This exchange leads to fun and somewhat flirtatious banter between Wendy and Luke, who discuss the pros and cons of trying to control Prince’s unique qualities.

Meanwhile, on the trading floor, traders were intently tracking the incoming hurricane, even placing bets on its name and category. Victor won the bet and the hurricane was called Hurricane Rosie. However, Taylor and Philip warned that Prince’s statutory claims could soar if the hurricane upgraded to Category 5, dampening their celebrations. Fortunately, the hurricane stabilized at Category 4.

Taylor and Philip soon realized that Vargas had not hidden his involvement and that Vargas had bribed a scientist responsible for classifying hurricanes with the promise of substantial research funding. Vargas’ victory was short-lived, however, as Prince called him into his office.

Realizing that the arrest warrant for Liu’s chartered plane was unexpected, Prince chose to keep the plane in the air while sending Kate Thacker to negotiate with Chuck on his behalf. The hurricane incident cast a negative light on Prince, as he seemed to profit from the destruction of many homes. Wendy convinced Vargas to take responsibility for his actions, saving him from being fired, as Prince admitted that Vargas couldn’t control himself.

Personal subplots unfold simultaneously. Wendy’s therapy session with Dr. Meyer ends abruptly when she reveals her true intentions to sabotage Mike Prince from the inside, causing collateral damage to Meyer’s clients. Wendy decided to end their meeting, but Meyer referred her client to Prince Michael Capital to assist Wendy in her “war.” The development raises questions about the simplicity of the arrangement.

On the other hand, the opportunity for Scooter to once again serve as orchestra conductor is also of huge significance. Scooter’s nephew Philip openly expressed his pride and invited the whole family to celebrate the momentous occasion and see Scooter realize his ambition.
