Horschel was born in Florida on December 7, 1986, to Billy Horschel Dr. and Kathy Horschel. He has two older brothers who also like to play sports. Horschel initially studied baseball but suffered an injury at the age of 14.

It made him choose Golf. It became his passion and he wanted to play golf professionally ever since. Horschel attended the University of Florida and earned a degree in sports management.
He entered the University on a scholarship while playing for the Florida Gator men’s golf team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. He played from 2006 to 2009 and won 3 first team titles.
He also earned four All-Americans and Southeastern Conference Player of the Year in 2007 and 2009. Horschel even represented the United States twice at the Palmer Cup in 2007 and 2008. He also won the prestigious Walker Cup.
He personally won medalist honors at the 2006 U.S. Amateur at the Hazeltine National Gold Club in Chaska, Minnesota. He set a record for opening play and holds the USGA record. However, Horschel could not make it to the 2006 US Open.
