It was undoubtedly the right choice, as Myeong-Gil would have undoubtedly targeted her for elimination as well. Meanwhile, Myeong-gil’s illicit operations continued to gain momentum, unhindered by Mr. Choi’s absence. Although we yearned for Mr. Choi to exact his revenge, the fateful day of reckoning never arrived.

It is unfortunate that Mr. Choi’s desire for Hyeon-joo’s safety prevented him from confronting his archenemy. Yet, perhaps it was predestined that their paths would cross once more.

Bloodhounds TV Show Review

Bloodhounds, a Korean series available on Netflix, boldly incorporates pandemic-related storylines, reflecting the COVID-19 era. The show explores the realm of private loans in South Korea, which witnessed a surge during the global financial crisis triggered by the pandemic. As individuals faced job losses, loan sharks took advantage of the situation, offering quick loans without requiring collateral.

The series derives its name from the enforcers employed by these loan sharks to ensure repayment, even resorting to violence if necessary. The protagonist, Kim Gun-woo, is an aspiring professional boxer who discovers that his mother has fallen prey to a predatory loan, burdened with exorbitant fees.

Driven by the desire for justice, Gun-woo teams up with Hong Woo-jin, another boxer, and becomes a bodyguard and investigator for President Choi, a comparatively benevolent moneylender in their district. Initially motivated by the need to repay his mother’s debt, Gun-woo’s mission evolves into a quest to confront those responsible for her suffering.

Together, they unravel a larger conspiracy involving Kim Myeong-gil, the very loan shark who deceived Gun-woo’s mother. The ensuing cat-and-mouse game takes viewers on an exhilarating journey as Gun-woo navigates the complex world of private lending. Although the series takes its time to establish the characters and the intricate financial landscape, it eventually picks up pace and immerses viewers in an action-packed narrative.

Promising high-speed car chases, well-executed fight sequences, and daring heists, the show succeeds in delivering on the entertainment front. Despite predictable losses, it manages to evoke emotional responses. However, Bloodhounds falls short when it comes to character development and thematic depth.

While Gun-woo and Woo-jin’s chemistry injects lighthearted moments into the story, the overall character portrayal lacks nuance. The series oversimplifies the moral complexities of the loan shark industry, depicting most lenders as inherently bad and only a select few as good, offering zero-interest loans.

It fails to explore the broader narrative of informal money lending and presents its characters in a one-dimensional manner. Furthermore, excessive reliance on exposition and the decision to replace more than half of the leading characters diminish the quality of the script.
