Early life
Barker was born in Darrington, Washington on December 12, 1923. He enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and worked part-time for a radio program, KTTS-FM Radio while attending college.
However, he never saw active duty during his time in the United States Navy. He attended Drury College in Missouri, earning a basketball scholarship and graduating with a degree in Economics. He moved to California to work in broadcasting.
Career
After moving to California in 1950, Barker was given his own radio show, ‘The Bob Barker Show’, which ran for 6 years. He also hosted a radio show on KNX in Los Angeles. He was discovered by ‘Truth or Consequences’ producer Ralph Edwards, who wanted to replace him with his former host. He liked the style and tone in which Barker spoke to his audience.
Barker’s next show was ‘Truth or Consequences’, which aired from 1956 to 1975. CBS expressed interest in having Bob Barker host their newest game show, ‘The Price is Right’.
