Early life
Robert Berisford Brown was born on February 5, 1969, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Carole Elizabeth, a substitute teacher, and Herbert James Brown, a construction worker. Brown and his siblings spent their childhood in Roxbury.
Brown’s first experience on stage was when one of his childhood idols, James Brown, performed in Boston, sparking his desire to pursue a singing career. He joined his church choir, where he discovered and honed his vocal abilities.
Career
Brown begins career in R&B and pop bands call New versionHe joined in 1978 and left in December 1985. At the age of 12, he formed New Edition. Their debut album Candy Girl reached the top 20 on the Billboard R&B Singles Chart in 1983.
Brown’s full lead vocal performance was on the New Edition ballad “Jealous Girl”, which peaked in 1983 as a hit single. Brown remained with the group for their final two albums in 1986.
Brown’s debut solo album, Don’t Be Cruel, produced five top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including the number-one hit, My Prerogative, and the Grammy Award-winning song, Every Little Step.
