That was while running the No. 9 for Steve Lewis Racing, where he won the series championship in 2004. His father, Bob East, a famous short track stock car racer, built the chassis for the car.
With 15 wins in three divisions of the USAC series, East enjoyed the greatest success of any driver in 2004. Wins at the Hut Hundred and Turkey Night Grand Prix were highlights of the season.
Team Lewis took first place overall in their number 9 car. After that, East began participating in stock car races. He failed to qualify for 3 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series events in 2005.
At Memphis that same year, East made his NASCAR Busch Series debut and finished 17th. He also entered the ARCA Re/Max Series that year. In 2007, Brewco Motorsports’ East joined the Busch Series in a part-time capacity.
Brewco became Baker Curb Racing after a change of ownership during the off-season. Despite losing the first two races of the season, East still finished 23rd in points. In 2008, East returned to the Truck Series in a part-time capacity.
He teamed up with Roush once again to drive their No. 09 Zaxby’s Ford F-150, which won the race’s pole at IRP. He was tasked with preparing for Memphis, the same circuit where he had started his racing three years earlier.
It was for racing in the No. 60 Nationwide (formerly Busch) car of Carl Edwards. After the season, he announced his retirement from NASCAR, making this his final performance in the series.

Cause of death
East was stabbed to death on July 13, 2022, by a man wanted on a parole violation warrant. After being searched at a neighboring apartment in Anaheim, the man was shot and killed by Orange County police.
