Early life
Born May 5, 1959, in Ridgewood, New Jersey. Williams grew up in a Catholic family, primarily of Irish descent. He is the son of Dorothy May and Gordon Lewis Williams. His mother was an amateur stage actress.
His father was the executive vice president of the National Retailers Association. Williams was the youngest of four children. He lived in Elmira, New York for nine years before moving to New Jersey when he was in junior high school.
He graduated from Mater Dei High School, where he served as the editorial editor of the school newspaper. Williams attended Brook Dale Community College before transferring to The Catholic University of America.
He later transferred to George Washington University. But despite all this, Williams never earned a college degree and later noted that leaving college remained one of his biggest regrets.
Career
Williams joined NBC News in 1993, where he anchored the nationally syndicated Weekend Nightly News. In 1996, he began serving as anchor and managing editor of The News with Brian Williams, which airs on MSNBC and CNBC.
Williams also served as the primary substitute anchor for The NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw. After Tom Brokaw retired, Williams became anchor of NBC nightly news on December 2, 2004.
Williams also appeared regularly on several television shows including John Stewart’s version of The Daily Show. He also appeared regularly on the NBC comedy “30 Rock” as himself. He then joined MSNBC in 2015 as their main Breakout News Anchor. I
In 2015, Williams was suspended for six months from “NBC Nightly News” for misrepresenting his Iraq War experience. Four months later, in June 2015, Brian Williams was fired from the show after the false statements were aired.
He was then demoted to news anchor for MSNBC, where he remained for the rest of his NBC career. In November 2021, Williams announced that he would leave MSNBC when his contract expired the following month.
