Britney Spears biopic based on memoir ‘The Woman In Me’ in the works: Here’s what we know

Britney Spears’ story is being made into a movie.

On Thursday, Universal Pictures announced that it has acquired the rights to the pop superstar’s 2023 best-seller, “The Woman in Me,” and will develop a biopic based on it, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Britney Spears biopic will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who is gearing up for the November release of the highly anticipated “Wicked,” starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Universal has confirmed that Marc Platt will produce.

On the same day, Spears teased the film by writing on X, formerly Twitter, that she was “so excited to share” with fans “a secret project” she was working on with Platt.

“He always makes my favorite movies… stay tuned,” she wrote.

As of this writing, no other details about the production, including cast and release date, have been released.

In November 2023, Spears took to X to thank her fans after “The Woman In Me” sold 1.1 million copies in its first week and reached No. 1 on The New York Times bestseller list.

“Thank you to all the fans who made #TheWomanInMe a #1 @nytimes bestseller,” the singer tweeted. “It really means the world to me! I love you all. [three kisses emojis]!”

The “Toxic” hitmaker shared in her memoir that she “went from partying all the time to becoming a full-fledged monk” after being controlled by her father.

Spears also claimed that security personnel would give her “pre-packaged envelopes of medication,” monitor her taking her medication, and “install parental controls” on her iPhone.

Music biopics like Spears’ upcoming film have become one of the most popular film genres in Hollywood in recent years, with films telling the stories of Elvis Presley, Amy Winehouse and Bob Marley among the most recent releases.

Upcoming music biopics also include “A Complete Unknown,” starring Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, and a Michael Jackson biopic slated for release next year.
