Early life and education

NBA All-Star LeBron James and his then-girlfriend Savannah James, then 18, welcomed their first child, Bronny James, on October 6, 2004. Both his parents raised him, and they later married in 2013.

He has an older brother named Bryce Maximus James and a sister named Zhuri James. His grandparents are Anthony McClelland, Gloria Marie James, JK Brinson and Jennifer Brinson.

Bronny James led Old Trail School, where he finished middle school, to victory in the Independent School League tournament in February 2018 in Bath Township, Summit County, Ohio. Before entering high school, he played basketball for several Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) teams. When he was nine years old, John Calipari, head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats, watched him play for the Miami City Ballers at an AAU tournament for fourth graders.

He guided the Gulf Coast Blue Chips AAU team to a Division 4 victory in the Dallas/Hype Sports Summer Jam League in June 2015. Bronny James helped the North Coast Blue Chips win the John Lucas All-Star Weekend in Houston in March 2018.

His Blue Chips won the under-13 championship at the NY2LA Swish ‘N Dish competition in Wisconsin on April 2, 2018, undefeated. He played for the same team in the National Basketball Association (NBA) Midwest Championship in June with ninth-graders, reaching the quarterfinals.

Bronny James joined the AAU Strive for Greatness team at the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) under-16 in Indianapolis in April 2019, despite being younger than most of his competitors at 14 years old. Career

Bronny James transferred to Sierra Canyon School, a private K–12 facility in Chatsworth, Los Angeles, on May 29, 2019, for her first year of high school. He enrolled at the school along with older brother Bryce Maximus James and senior Zaire Wade, the son of his father’s longtime basketball teammate, Dwyane Wade.

Brandon Boston Jr. and Ziaire Williams, two five-star recruits, joined Bronny James at Sierra Canyon in the following months. The team was one of the top teams in high school basketball entering the season, and 15 of its games were broadcast on ESPN. He made his high school debut on November 21, 2019, scoring 10 points off the bench in a blowout win over Montgomery High School.

Bronny James defeated his father’s alma mater, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, on December 14 and was named the game’s most valuable player (MVP) with 15 points, including the game-winning layup. He had a season-high 17 points on January 15, 2020, in a win over Viewpoint School. He was the only member of Sierra Canyon to play in all 34 games as a rookie, averaging 4.1 points in 15 minutes per game.

He tore his meniscus during his second season and had surgery to repair it. Thad Matta, Ohio State’s head coach at the time, joked about having to offer Bronny James a scholarship when he was 9 years old. He was offered basketball scholarships by colleges before 2015, although his exact name was kept secret.

On his recruiting profile on 247Sports.com as of 2021, he listed Kentucky as his top school choice, followed by Duke, Kansas, North Carolina and UCLA. Kentucky was the only school that extended a scholarship. At the start of his third year, 247Sports.com lowered Bronny James’s prospect ranking from 27th to 52nd. In his third year, he moved up from 49th to 43rd on ESPN’s rankings after starting his freshman year ranked 20th.

Bronny James’s position in Rivals.com’s prospect rankings dropped from 29th to 60th in the summer of 2022. Several organizations, including Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, UCLA and USC, expressed interest in August 2022. He received offers from Memphis and Penny Hardaway on August 19, 2022.
