She made her debut in an uncredited role in Gordon Hessler’s 1971 thriller The Murders in the Rue Morgue, based on the Edgar Allan Poe short story of the same name. She also had uncredited roles in the 1974 film version of The Great Gatsby, The Lords of Flatbush, and other films.
In 1975, Brooke Adams appeared in five television movies: The Murder of Flight 502, The Return of Joshua Cabe’s Daughter, Who is the Black Dahlia?, and The Song of the Succubus. She starred in three episodes of the ABC series The Family between 1977 and 1978. She appeared on screen with Richard Gere, Sam Shepard, and Linda Manz in Terrence Malick’s 1978 romantic historical drama Days of Heaven.
The heroine Abby, her boyfriend and his sister flee Chicago for the Texas Panhandle. They then start working for a large and successful company, where they meet their boss, a taciturn man who falls in love with Abby and marries her. In 1978, Brooke Adams starred in another Philip Kaufman classic, “Innocent Flower.” Innocent Flower was a box office success based on the 1956 film of the same name, but received mixed reviews from critics.
