Brownie Jeffery Samukai Jr. (born January 20, 1968) is a former Minister of Defense of Liberia.
He is a politician appointed during the term of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf from 2006 to 2018.
He is a technocrat with extensive experience in peacekeeping and peacekeeping.
Brownie Samukai held various peacekeeping positions under various governments in Liberia.
However, he is known for his hatred of hooliganism and acts of terrorism.

Early life
Brownie Samukai was born in Lofa County; a rural area in Liberia, and had a rough childhood.
He was born on January 20, 1968.
He had to work various jobs from a young age to make a living while his father, Brownie J. Samukai, Sr. (1914–2009), was an influential man in society.
He has a lot of responsibility in taking care of Brownie Samukai which involves developing a sense of safety in the boy from an early age.
This is because he often tries to make sure the environment he and his friends want to play in before doing what they want to do.

Education
Astute politician, Brownie Samukai completed his primary and post-primary education in Liberia before matriculating to the prestigious University of Liberia where he graduated with honors before being recruited into the Liberian civil service.
Career
Brownie Samukai has been involved in politics since the 1980s and has held various positions since then. He has previously worked at the Liberian Ministry of Defense since 1986-87.
In 1991, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense for Operations. It is noted that he was “responsible for reestablishing civilian control over the Liberian Army and establishing an urban response team to combat urban terrorism.” He held this position until 1994.
In 1993 and 1994, Brownie Samukai served as commander of the ‘Black Berets’, a paramilitary police force in the Monrovia enclave of Amos Sawyer’s Interim Government of National Unity (IGNU). The International Crisis Group also notes that the Black Berets also fought alongside ECOMOG at times, notably during Charles Taylor’s 1992 attack on Monrovia (‘Operation Octopus’).
Brownie Samukai also served as Director of the Liberia National Police from 1994–95 and Deputy Minister of Administration from 1995 to 1997.[3]
In 1998, he served on the AFL Restructuring Committee, where he was listed as a retired AFL Colonel in private enterprise.
Since 1999, Brownie Samukai has worked as a security officer for the United Nations, first with UNTAET in East Timor, and then since 2000 with UNHCR and the United Nations Department of Safety and Security in Tanzania.
In 2006, he was appointed Minister of Defense by President Ellen Sirleaf, a position he held until 2018.
He ran for the Lofa County Senate seat in northwestern Liberia, a contested election with various lawsuits, which has delayed his certification as a member of the Senate to this day.
