BTS member Suga apologizes once again for his drunk driving incident.
In a heartfelt handwritten letter posted on Weverse on Sunday, the K-pop artist issued a second apology to his group’s fans, known as ARMY, after he was involved in a drunken scooter riding incident earlier this month.
The 31-year-old rapper expressed deep remorse for his actions, acknowledging the disappointment and hurt he caused to those who loved and supported him.
“I would like to apologize to you once again with shame. I am deeply sorry for the disappointment and hurt that my wrongdoing has caused to my fans and everyone who loves me,” Suga wrote in the note, according to a translation by Billboard.
He admitted that he made a “big mistake” by forgetting the responsibility that comes with the love and support he receives from fans.
The incident occurred on August 6, when Suga made the ill-advised decision to ride an electric scooter after drinking. In his apology, Suga detailed the events that took place that night, explaining that he was close to his apartment and felt comfortable going on the ride, but ended up falling while trying to park the scooter.
Police observed the fall and conducted a breathalyzer test, which showed Suga’s blood alcohol level was above the legal limit of 0.08, resulting in the suspension of his driver’s license.
Reiterating his initial apology, which was hastily issued a day after the incident, the “Daechwita” hitmaker admitted that he should have thought more carefully and been more careful in his response.
“I should have thought more deeply and carefully, but I couldn’t,” he wrote. “It’s all my fault. My carelessness is causing trouble for everyone who cares about me. I will try not to do anything wrong again and live in repentance.”
Suga’s remorse goes beyond his actions, as he also expressed deep concern about the impact his actions have had on his fellow BTS members and their shared legacy.
“Due to this incident, I have greatly damaged the precious memories I have created with the members and fans, and put great pressure on the name of BTS,” he said. “I feel so regretful and painful that it is hard to describe because it is causing harm to the members and the group.”
BTS’ agency BigHit previously released a statement noting that Suga was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident and had only walked about 500 meters before falling. The severity of the situation was not lost on Suga, however, as he expressed his deep regret for disappointing the fans who have always supported him.
“I just feel sorry for the fans who have always given me so much love… I know that it is difficult to heal the wounds and disappointments that fans have suffered with any words, so I deeply regret it and reflect on it with a heavy heart every day,” he wrote.
Suga concluded his apology by stating that he is willing to accept any future criticism, reprimands, or decisions arising from the incident.
South Korean police have yet to issue formal punishment to Suga, although local media reported that he admitted to drunk driving during three hours of police questioning last week.
Suga has less than a year left to complete his mandatory alternative military service in South Korea, after being determined unfit for regular combat duty due to a shoulder injury in 2020.
