Early life
Cain Ramirez Velasquez was born on July 28, 1982, in Salinas, California, to parents Efrain and Isabel Velasquez. Efrain came to the United States as an illegal immigrant from Sonora, Mexico, where he met Isabel, a native of the United States.
They began dating and later married, allowing Efrain to become a US citizen. Efrain Jr., Adela, and Cain Velasquez are the Velasquez family’s three children. Velasquez was born and raised in Yuma, Arizona.
Education and early career
He was a four-year wrestler at Kofa High School, where he went 110–10 and won the Arizona 5A wrestling championship twice. Velasquez also played football for three years. He was captain of the wrestling and football teams as a senior. He was a linebacker in football.
He wrestled one season at Iowa Central Community College after high school, winning the NJCAA national championship in the heavyweight division in 2001-2002. Velasquez then went to Arizona State University.
He wrestled for the Sun Devils for three seasons, going 86–17 and finishing fifth in the nation in 2005 and fourth in 2006. Velasquez wrestled future UFC fighters Ryan Bader and CB Dollaway at ASU. He earned a degree in interdisciplinary studies from ASU in 2006.
Career
After graduating, Velasquez began training at the American Kickboxing Academy. He made his mixed martial arts debut in 2006, defeating Esse Fujarczyk in the first round via TKO. Velasquez then faced Jeremiah Constant, who was undefeated at the time.
He won by TKO in the first round. At UFC 83 in 2008, he fought Brad Morris for the first time. He defeated his opponent by TKO in the first round. The following year, he fought Jake O’Brien at UFC Fight Night 14.
Velasquez won the opening round by TKO. Velasquez’s impressive victory secured him a rematch with UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar. During that encounter, he nearly tore his rotator cuff.
