Early life

Aaron Boseman was born on November 29, 1976, and grew up in Anderson, South Carolina, to Carolyn, a nurse, and Leroy Boseman, who worked in a textile mill and managed an upholstery business.

Boseman practiced martial arts as a child and continued to practice as an adult. He wanted to be an architect as a child. He grew up in the nearby town of Belton.

College life

Boseman played basketball while attending TL Hanna High School. He graduated from high school in 1995. He turned down a college basketball scholarship to pursue art.

With a Bachelor of Fine Arts in directing, he left Howard University in 2000. His play Hieroglyphic Graffiti was inspired by his work at an African-American bookstore while he was a student at Howard.

Boseman and his classmates were accepted into the Oxford Summer Program of the British-American Drama Academy at Balliol College, Oxford, England. He attended the program in 1988.

He learned to appreciate the plays of William Shakespeare as well as the works of Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter. While in college, he made his first trip to the continent to work with his professor Mike Malone in Ghana.
