early life
Chance the Rapper was born on April 16, 1993 in South Chicago as Chancelor Johnathan Bennett. He had a comfortable middle-class family: his father, Ken Williams-Bennett, worked for the mayor of Chicago and later worked for Senator Barack Obama. Chance began rapping as Chano as a teenager and formed the band Instrumentality with his friend J-Emcee. Chance’s brother, Taylor Bennett, also began a rap career.
While a senior at Jones College Prep High School, Chance the Rapper was suspended for 10 days for marijuana possession, which he used to record his first solo mixtape, 10 Day, a 14-track album that included collaborations with frequent Future collaborator Vic Mensa and production from Flying Lotus.
The album was released as a free download on mixtape website DatPiff. He has already caught the attention of Complex magazine, which included him in its list of 10 new Chicago rappers to watch in February 2012, noting that Chance has one of the most unique styles and voices of all new artists in the field.
