Chappell Roan Reveals How Miley Cyrus Helped Inspire Her Career: ‘She Puts Out Very Authentic Music’

Chappell Roan considers Hannah Montana, the iconic Disney Channel character played by Miley Cyrus, to be his role model.

In a video tribute played at the 2024 D23 Awards on Sunday, Roan warmly welcomed Cyrus as she was honored as a Disney Legend.

Reflecting on the impact the character’s identity-changing antics have had on her music, Roan — whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz — shared that Cyrus’ “Hannah Montana” concert from more than a decade ago still resonates with her to this day.

“[The] “The Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana tour with the Jonas Brothers opening was my first concert,” “My Kink Is Karma” recalled, as seen in a video shared by Pop Crave on X, formerly Twitter. “She landed through the ceiling in a box. I was like, ‘How can I do that someday?’ I still think about it. I still think about the show. I want to be like Hannah Montana.”

“There are a lot of similarities between Miley and my project, and I’m a fan of hers too,” Roan added.

Cyrus’ attraction to Roan is evident in the image she projects today and the way she uses her pop image to create protection from the pressures of fame.

“What I admire about Miley Cyrus is that she constantly reinvents herself and always works hard,” the 26-year-old singer shared.

“For a lot of artists, this might seem inauthentic or sudden, but she’s been very open about her transformation artistically and personally. She puts out music that’s very authentic,” Roan said of Cyrus.

Since entering the music industry, Roan has affirmed her reputation as a pop princess.

Earlier this year, the “Good Luck, Babe!” hitmaker joined Olivia Rodrigo’s “Guts” world tour as the opening act.

She has since performed on stage at numerous music festivals, including Outside Lands, Coachella, Gov’s Ball, Boston Calling, Kentuckiana Pride, Lollapalooza, Osheaga, and Hinterland.

In fact, Roan’s performance at Lollapalooza this year “was the biggest daytime performance we’ve ever seen,” a spokesperson for the music festival told CNN, adding: “It was a magical moment that was added to the Lolla DNA.”

Roan was originally scheduled to perform on a smaller stage at Lollapalooza, but her popularity skyrocketed in the weeks leading up to the event, prompting organizers to move her to the main stage.

In a last-minute change, Roan swapped performance times with Kesha, which was confirmed by a Lollapalooza spokesperson.

Meanwhile, at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee, Roan attracted such a large crowd that festival organizers were forced to move her performance to a larger stage to accommodate the large crowd.
